“Classic Gothenburg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

My wife and I were in Scandinavia in late August. Our stop in Gothenburg was memorable for several reasons, one of which was our pleasant stay at Hotel Poseidon. The location is ideal -- a 12-15 minute walk to anywhere, or so they say. Seriously, it's a short walk to major restaurants, sightseeing and shopping and the buildings along the street are all lovely historic structures. The hotel is family run; our interactions were mainly with the 20-30-something son, who is incredibly helpful and the perfect greeter, host and efficient repairman. He's a wonderful asset to the family business. The hotel prices were reasonable; the breakfasts huge and varied; and the rooms are older -- befitting the age of the building -- but modernized, complete with heated tile floors in the bathroom and wifi. We'd go back in a heartbeat!

Nicely located close to the main street: Avenyen. About 6 min walk. In general a nice and cozy hotel, with interior from the early 80s. Nice and helpfull staff. Cheap basic food and beer at the reception area. The breakfast was traditional swedish buffet with swedish meatballs and scrambeled eggs, in addition to a wide range of jams, cheese and ham. Warm bread. Different types of cereal. juice, milk, coffe, tea all the basics. The hotel lies in a calm area. Nothing fancy, but well worth the money. There is a lot of nice restaurants close by, especially a restaurant called: Jalla Jalla, Mediterranean food. The food is good. We we´re there on a friday night, a bit crowded and the food took over 30 min.

This is a good 3 star hotel. The location is great, not far from the train station and just a few blocks from city centre. Our room was nice, comfortable and very clean. We stayed for two nights and for us it was a perfect hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good, everything fresh and delicious. They have coffee and tea facilities at the lobby and free wi-fi. It is a great choice if you are looking for a good hotel at a reasonable price.

An old style B&B which is family run and friendly. But don't expect frills.

A good 3 star hotel that delivers just what it promises to. Beds comfortable, bathroom a little cosy but acceptable, and we found it all very peaceful even though we overlooked the street. Staff were smiling, helpful and professional. Breakfast was standard fare and enjoyable all for that.

If there are two of you travelling from the airport it is just about the same cost to get a taxi to the hotel as it is to get the airport bus and get a taxi from the terminal. The hotel is just a couple of blocks away from Avenyn and just about anywhere else you would want to get to.

The city was hosting lots of free concerts, and was therefore pretty crowded which made it also a lot of fun. Everyone we met was very friendly, open, helpful and with a good sense of humour.

This is fast becoming a trendy vibrant destination I expect a lot more people, especially the young, to visit over the next few years. Go quickly and certainly consider the Poseidon as a place to stay.

Restaurants we can recommend include Brasserie Lipp, and Ma Cuisine. Both had pretty good value, excellent food and charming service. The dining rooms in both were very French.

Two thumbs up both for Gothenburg and the Hotel Poseidon.

The Poseidon Hotel is in a rather good location - you have to walk quite a bit to the seafront, but a lot of worthwhile sightseeing is very close.
Obviously, the hotel is already a couple of years old and our room showed a certain need for renovation in *some* areas - in other areas, it was up-to-date and/or renovated: Obviously, the owners do care.
Our room was small, but not too tiny (we actually had a rather big balcony, even though it extended to our neighbour's window ;)). Everything was clean - absolutely no concern here.
The only, but important thing that did bother me was the bed: On the one hand it was small (a 110cm? Queen Bed for 2) and also the mattress was too soft for my taste. In the end, we did not sleep to well, which is a pity.
Service was absolutely ok (though nothing to brag about) and the breakfast was good for 3 stars: Atmosphere and selection were "limited" but quality was very good - I liked it.

Overall, location was good and the price reasonable, while nothin was extraordinary. Due to the bed, I am kind of leaning towards giving this only 3 points, but concerning especially the pricing of "upper class" hotels (which also often are in a worse location), this is a friendly 4 points: It is certainly one of the best deals in town. Just don't expect too much and you will be happy :-)

Hotel Poseidon is located perfectly, not on a busy street so you have to endure a lot of noise at night, but still only a 1-2 minute walk from Kungsportsavenyn and about 15 minutes from Liseberg. The staff was very welcoming, the room was fine and was offered at a reasonable price. The breakfast buffet was good and had a nice selection of bread, yogurt, cereals etc.

I'd recommend it if you're not looking for anything fancy but still wants a good, central stay for a good price!
