We stayed at the Hôtel Eggers for a long weekend in late november. Having visited Gothenburg earlier and noticed Eggers's supreme location and impressive façade, we decided to give it a try.
The special "Eggers experience" is much due to the historical atmosphere of the building. The lobby, the elegant staircase and especially the opulent breakfast room with its stained glass ceiling are all reminders of the bygone era of railway hotels, which Hôtel Eggers can be said to have been. You will even recognize the hotel coat of arms in the hallway carpet!
As for the rooms, I have a suspicion that the rooms of the hotel are under redecoration. We were five people in three rooms, and we all agreed that my room was the better one - it appeared to have been redecorated and furnished no more than, say, five years ago, while the décor of the other rooms looked about 10-15 years older (the bathrooms were an indication of this). However, I feel obliged to emphasize that none of Eggers's rooms are (or should be) really modern in style - this would of course be out of place in such a traditional hotel. Overall, the rooms were comfortable and clean.
Two of us had a room facing the street outside, and in this case the traffic noise made it difficult to sleep with the window open. My room faced the inner court, and the difference was absolutely discernible.
Hôtel Eggers is very conveniently located; the shopping areas and pedestrian streets are close, the railway station is just across the road and the tram stop Drottningtorget outside provides access to many of Gothenburgs user-friendly tramway lines, which span the major parts of the city.
The breakfast was a generous, traditional scandinavian one. There's free tea/coffee in the lobby if you would like to sit down and have a break. All members of the staff were helpful and attentive.
I think Eggers's strength is its history and atmosphere, manifested in the classical architecture. If you're after a top-class, luxurious hotel, you might be disappointed, but if you appreciate a hotel with great character, charm and sense of history, you'll find it's a hotel to remember... and return to!
