Butterfly Garden Villa is located well off the beaten path, south of Lamai. You'll need a car to get into town for groceries, restaurants, and nightlife in Chaweng (30 mins away) or Lamai (15 mins). David made it relatively painless for us by providing a free ride to and from the villa, and by helping us rent a car which was at the villa when we arrived. The beach is an easy half kilometer walk down the hill and across a field of coconut trees.
The beach near the villa is quite nice with white sand and few people. The water is shallow, think knee-high, so it's not great for swimming. Even still, we made several trips down to the beach and for relaxation and amazing ocean views.
Tip: Walk a bit north along the beach and you'll hit the fishing village of Maret with lots of colorful boats lashed to the shore. We tried to charter a boat here for the day but couldn't find anyone who spoke English. You might have better luck.
The villa was visually stunning and immaculately clean. The pool was fantastic and the outdoor dining table with a fan over it was perfect for relaxing dinners. The four bedrooms each with king-size bed and ensuite bathroom, were perfect for our group. The mattresses are more firm than you may be used to, but very typical for Thailand. The kitchen is equipped with plenty of pots/pans/dishes/knives, a microwave, gas stove, and plenty of counter space for food prep. The washing machine was a godsend as it allowed everyone to pack less clothes. There's a great walkthrough video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Kp7bpQ76To
The three big couches in the common area were perfect for hanging out, but there's no AC outside the bedrooms so we frequently had to take a dip in the pool to cool off. The jacuzzi is not a hot tub, but given the heat in Samui this wasn't really a problem.
Tip: This is a jungle island and ants are everywhere. Don't leave any food out even for a short time.
David was very responsive via email and made sure someone was available to pick us up at the airport when he couldn't do it himself. Neung (David's assistant) and the cleaning staff came by to clean every 3 days and provide us with fresh towels. The internet went down shortly after we got into the villa, but we were able to get a hold of David via the phone he provided and a couple days later it was back up. When the island authorities shut off the water for rationing, David hired a company to truck in water so we barely even noticed.
If you're looking for lots of eating out and partying at bars, this isn't the location for you. If on the other hand, you're looking for a relaxing vacation with friends or family, it's perfect.
We all had a fantastic experience on Samui and that was in no small part due to this beautiful property and David/Neung's hard work. We'll be staying here again on our next trip to the island.
