“Food lacked a wow factor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

Relaxed atmosphere, or at least it tries to be. It was almost entirely businessmen when we were there. Waiters in jeans and aprons provided fine service.
The concept - which is a good one I thought - is just to order small plates, rather than courses. Good king crab, but the scallops and truffel lacked taste. Lamb's heart ok, duck breast pleasant enough.
At the end of the day, the food lacked a wow factor. I regret not going to the proper restaurant part.

“Beautiful but simple restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

If you love food you must visit either the Matsalen or Matbaren. Completely by chance I recently visited the Matbaren restaurant after receiving a recommendation from the Grand Hotel's Concierge. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel and has great views out over the water. The restaurant is split between the forma dining side (Matsalen) and the informal side (Matbaren). The informal Matbaren side is beautiful laid out, featuring modern Scandinavian design and is organised around the central bar which has views into the kitchen area.

The food comes in effectively small to medium size tasting portions and the concept is that you can pick and mix your dishes to suit your needs. The majority of dishes are sourced from local produce. Both of the fish dishes I sampled were beautiful excited, simply presented, with a limited number of ingredients but brought together in an exquisite blend of flavours. The chocolate dish I had for dessert was sublime.

Overall a great dining experience and I can't wait to go back to Stockholm to experience the sister Matsalen restaurant.

“Interesting idea of serving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

This restaurant has an interesting concept of serving. Dishes are seasonal according to ingredients available. They are basically divided between dishes with Swedish ingredients and those from elsewhere. Dishes are individual portions and you order them one at the time (they come very fast, but are carefully prepared. We had Swedish deer and squid; and scallop tartar. In average, you will be satisfied with 2 to 4 dishes. Service is very good and waiters know how to harmonize each dish with wines available. A very good surprise!

“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

These two restaurants, the "simpler" Matbaren (*) and the fine-dining Matsalen (**), are absolutely two of the best and nicest restaurants to visit! We had the privilege to visit them both, on friday the Matbaren and on saturday the Matsalen. Both visits were great but a bit different, both have incredible good food but in different "styles" as you in Matbaren, you can just pop in for a small bite or a complete dinner but in Matsalen, you can expect a whimsical experience, not just breathtakingly very tasty food but also quite fun in presentation. The staff is very professional but not at all "stuffy", just very very kind and the whole experience also add more value and another cause to stay at the Grand Hôtel where you find these two brilliant restaurants. Longing to get back!
