“WELL WORTH A VISIT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Was treated to this restaurant for my b-day. There was a choice of a 7 course or 5 course tasting menu and we opted for the 5 course menu with the drinks pairing. All dishes were very good and there were lots of amuses served before and in between the dishes and though we had only "five" dishes - we could have had a single morsel more. Service was attentive and knowledgeable and the wines to go with the dishes were well selected. Locale beautiful. Perhaps on the expensive side but still not to the extent that one feels ripped off - our bill amounted to around 2,500 SEK/per person. This restaurant used to have a Michelin star but lost it a couple of years ago but compared to other starred restaurants - I think this one would definitely deserve one. Possible complaint is that the toilet is so far away from the dining room and shared with other venues within the building and when I went there - there was a n event just ending and the queue was endless. Would nevertheless be happy to go again.

“Treated like royalty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

We had made reservations a couple months in advance for the Julbord - the Christmas Smorgasbord - at this highly-recommended restaurant in the Royal Opera. From start to end, we felt like we were the most special persons in the room, and the room was full. We may have been the only non-Swedish couple there, but we were taken care of from the moment we were escorted into the dining room. We were given a tour of the Julbord (yes, you need a tour to take it all in if you are not familiar with it!), and received explanations on what to eat first, then second, then third, then fourth... etc.! They took such good care of us by guiding us through the courses - and the accompanying beverages! - and seemed to really care about us having a very authentic Julbord experience. They went above and beyond, but never in an intrusive or patronizing way - always in a helpful and very friendly way. This was a major highlight of our trip to Stockholm, and the price well worth the experience. They truly made it an unforgettable experience for us - not just a meal.

“Classic High Sweden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

Swedes are not Danes. The two countries are quite distinct. You might say that Denmark is the Italy of Scandinavia, and Sweden is the more serious, some would say dour, half of the pair. Stockholm is a more formal city than Copenhagen. But the food in both cities is excellent. If you happen to find yourself in Stockholm (and you should make sure that you do, at least once in your life) and if are looking for a very impressive, satisfying, slightly formal, experience with Swedish cuisine and culture, a great place to start (or end) is at Operakallaren. It's a "very special night out" kind of place, so dress accordingly. It's a wonderful experience, particularly in the dark days of winter. The menu is extensive and the cooking is excellent. The service is formal, but what's troublesome about that? Indulge! Herring and more herring (I love herring) and all sorts of other treats from the sea. Have a dessert with cloudberries. They are etherial and a special treat in Sweden. Go for it. You will forget many other places, but you won't forget Operakallaren.

“Fantastic! Hope next December will come soon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

The food is always wonderful, but the Christmas Smörgås bord is fantastic! The staff is more than welcoming and the whole restaurant is just beaming! We sat in the small separate room facing the Royal Palace and Grand Hotel watching the snowflakes fall... It is very hard to choose... Heerings to die for, bleak roe, eggs with shrimp and salmon to start! All traditional Swedish food such as meatballs, tiny sausages and the best Christmas ham I have had in years. All salads and extras you can imagine. Tiny hot potatoes brought to the table by our wonderful waiter-who also took the snow away from cars outside-when not attending to us. All puddings are placed next to an assortment of cheese out on the terrace. They are sooo good! Oscar II cake, tiny "dammsugare", fruit salad and many more goodies to be had! A pretty Gingerbread House too.Now-my only complaint! They should not, ever, never be presented in silly little plastic cups in a place like this. Tacky. I especially HATE the Alvar Aalto lookalike. But, what is inside is great! I really long for next year! This is also a place for friends, families etc but if you have foreigners visiting do take them. They will love it! Do not forget to admire the decor and the beautifully painted ceilings! God Jul! ps: reservations is a must!

“Best not only in Stockholm but in Sweden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

The food, environment and service was fantastic. It is quite expensive, but worth every Swedish krone we payed. I would love to go back.
