“Very mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014 via mobile

This is a charming hotel, with friendly staff and loads of atmosphere. On the down side:
- the location is dull, surrounded by boring housing blocks from the 60-ies, but close to the metro that takes you down town in 10 minutes.
- the room I was given (104) was small and dark, with a bathroom so tiny that you barely could turn around in it.
- a terrible pillow, that my head could not come to terms with. Maybe I'm spoiled by Japanese hotels where you can choose your own pillow from the pillow bar...

All in all a bit disappointing experience at 1290 Swedish kronor

Thank you for taking your time to write a review about your stay with us. Feedback from our guests is very important for us. I am glad to hear your kind words about our hotel and my staff.

Regarding the location we really do like the neighborhood that has a lot of restaurants, cafes, secondhand shops and with walking distance to the shopping mall at Hornstull. We are sorry to hear that you didn’t feel so. The staff at the reception are always happy to suggest places to visit that are located here in Södermalm.

Hellstens Malmgård is located in a rebuilt mansion from 1770 and that makes all out rooms different in style, shape and size. Since our rooms are all unique we do wish for our guests to let us know if for some reason they are not happy with their room, the front desk will do their best to change to another room when possible.

We do have a selection of pillows and in each room there should be two types. If that wasn’t the case in your room I do apologize and I will make sure to have a look at all rooms so they do have both types.

As for most hotels, our rates vary upon demand so if you for an example stay during low season, eg. Summer, the rates are usually a bit lower.

I do hope to see you back at Hotel Hellstens Malmgård in the future. We would love to give you another room and to provide you with a great stay. Welcome!

Kind regards,
Per Hellsten

We booked here after reading rave reviews by others and it did not disappoint. Upon arriving in the darkness in a new country where fortunately they speak perfect english, we had to ask three or four people how to get to this address. We ended up following some other travelers up the hill to this charming property. Our room was listed as a small double which was roomy enough, with a modern bath, fluffy duvets and a large window overlooking a playground on the side of the building. It is very convenient to the metro train which is two stops from the center of town and where you can take a free ferry across to an amusement park when it's open (not in March) and to the famous ABBA museum. We walked inside and looked but didn't get tickets. The ferry was nice and the weather was sunny and not cold. Oh, and we found an amazing italian restaurant around the corner from the hotel metro stop with the best restaurant lasagne I have ever had. They even took our American money. Very nice.

Dear Frederick,

Thank you for writing this lovely review and sharing your thoughts. We really appreciate your kind words and are glad to hear how much you enjoyed your stay with us.
I am glad that you had the chance to take the ferry to beautiful Djurgården and do agree that it is such a great way to experince a part of Stockholm by. In Stockholm we have so many great museum so I am happy to read that you got to see a few of them.
To have the merto near us is a true prevlige and its nice that you also felt so.
There is lots of great restaurants in the neiberhood and Pane Vino sure is on of the best.

I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to us again in the future if you come to Stockholm.

Kind regards
Per Hellsten

This is a romantic little hotel on Södermalm, Stockholm's most charming part. The closest neighbourhood isn't the most charming, but it is very quiet and the nearest subway station is 200m away (less than 10 Min from Central Station). Not at least, the finest views of Stockholm are just around the corner, from the top of Skinnarviksberget. We chose a room on the attic, a little unpractical when you (like me) are very tall, but definitely a room with its own personality - and it is good. The first room we got was improper (windows were not adjusted to frames and no hot water in the shower), but the service-minded reception staff helped us change room without fuzz. This new room was perfect. The first-class breakfast was served in a very nice breakfast room in the basement where the staff was time-flexible and let the guests enjoy the meal. Thank you!
Our only negative remark is regarding the cleaning, which was a little lousy. We found plenty of dustballs under and around the bed together with paper flakes and even an old chocolate bar. The rooms were also made up a little late in the day.
Nevertheless, we are very satisfied with our stay here, and would absolutely recommend others to stay here too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the attic when you order, especially

Dear John Lackland,

Thank you for writing this lovely review and sharing your thoughts.

We really appreciate your kind words and are glad to hear how much you enjoyed your stay with us.
Since all of our rooms are unique we do wish for our guests to let us know if they are not happy with the room, and I am very pleased that you after doing so received a room that was to your liking.

I am very glad to hear that you liked the breakfast and that the service met the high standard we set for giving you, as our guest the best stay possibly.

Skinnarviksberget truly has one of the most spectacular views over Stockholm and I am so glad that you got to enjoy it!.

The lack of service with the cleaning is not acceptable and actions have been taken to improve this.

You are always welcome to stay with us again the next time you are in Stockholm.
Kind regards
Per Hellsten

I visited Hotel Hellstens Malmgård on a business trip in the middle of February 2014 but I must admit that I didn´t spend too much time at the hotel.

It´s located in the middle of Södermalm which is for many the most bohemic neighborhood in town. When getting there, you get surprised since this hotel is not the typical Scandinavian design hotel. It´s located on an old building which is very odd compared with the surrounding buildings.

The rooms are located in different buildings and the reception feels a bit small. Maybe a minus is that there is not a common area where you could sit and be social. The room itself had nice thick curtains which I think can be useful during the summer. My room kept the original wooden floor, which for being in the middle of the winter, felt a bit cold. Luckily the hotel provides sleepers that were very well used. The bed was comfortable with a wide selection of pillows. The closet was not that big, but for my 4 days stay, it worked fine. There were not too many channels on the TV but the WiFi was really fast. A couple of minuses were that it was a bit cold in the room and the water came from the shower with not too much pressure.

The breakfast was simple, but good enough. Maybe a good improvement will be to provide warm food, like scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon etc for the brekfast.

Thinking about the price, the location, the service, and the special feeling of living in an old house, I think it was a very positive experience.

Room Tip: Room 624 was good.

The good: Everything is just perfect with this charming hotel in this bohemian neighborhood of Stockholm. We stayed here three weekends during our Sweden trip and the hotel offered us a discount upfront which usually only applies if you stay there for consecutive 4 nights. The rooms are nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Despite the very small wardrobe the staff did not hesitate to supply extra hangers on request. In general the staff was always very friendly and welcoming and eager to make sure you have a great stay as guest. The breakfast buffet is small yet sufficient to get your day started (watch the low ceiling though as the breakfast room is situated in the basement of this old manor). The biggest advantage is the location! There is a metro station just around the corner that gets you into the city centre 5 stops away and the metro is quite good and goes all night on weekends too. If you are good on foot you also could walk into the city which will take you approximately 20-30 minutes. The neighborhood offers a great variety of restaurants, cafes and stores.

The bad: Absolutely nothing really. If you look for a stay away from the big noisy chain hotels this is definitely the place to stay!

Dear David,

I am absolutely thrilled that you had a nice stay with us!
Our main goal is to give you as a guest the best service we can and are glad that you felt that.
I do agree that a warning for the low ceiling at the door to the breakfast room is in place, it’s the small flaws of our 300 year old building that makes it even more loveable to us.
To have the subway so near to us is a true privilege!
We are very pleased that the hotel is located in such a up-and-coming neighborhood where new restaurants and shops opens up all the time and are happy to hear that you got to enjoy that.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you to us again if you come back to Stockholm.

Kind regards,
Per Hellsten
