“Not as good as it looked at the pictures”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

A hotel in the center of Stockholm. 30 min walk to "gamla stan". The pictures on the hotel homepage shows nice rooms, but the ones we got didn't match the pictures. The first one was on the top floor just below the roof. Very tight. Almost no light only a little circular window. The bathroom was ok. After asking for an other room we got a lightfull room but very little. Only about 1 meter free space around the bed ( a 140/200 cm bed ). The bathroom was very small. No space for what you have with you for use in the bathroom. The breakfast was ok but served in a basement room.

Dear Jensens_Koege,

Thank you for taking your time to write this review about your stay. Feedback from our guests is very important to us and we find it important to communicate back to explain certain circumstances.

Hotel Hellstens Malmgård is situated in a rebuilt mansion from 1770. It is a remarkable historic building which has been declared a cultural heritage site. Therefore the renovation of this house has been done very carefully. Due to this, the rooms are indeed very different and quite spectacular. A few are located on the top floor below the roof with wooden beams, like the room you were first checked into, and some rooms are in fact small and narrow. Many others again are bigger. To me this makes the hotel charming and something special, but I do understand if this was not ideal for you. It seems you did reserved a small double room when booking, but whenever it is possible our staff always try to change the room if you are not satisfied, and this also happened in your case.

Maybe the next time when you visit Stockholm we would suggest you to try our four star hotel at Norrmalm, Hotel Hellsten. The rooms at Hotel Hellsten are all different as well, but I think it could be more of your style.

Kind regards,
Per Hellsten

This is a lovely hotel with a location very close to a subway stop. Just beware that the bathrooms in some of the rooms are VERY narrow - less than 18" wide, with shower entries about 12" wide. Beds were comfortable and breakfast was nice. There is also a little backyard with tables and chairs for breakfast or for relaxing.

Room Tip: If you decide to save money and choose a small room, be aware that the room is very small. Won'...

This old building has seen many uses -even a reform school ! The beds were comfy but the room barely contained enough space for the bed .My husband and I could not pass between the bed and window at the same time . The bathroom is very elegant but tiny .We liked the slate walls and floor ,but there was no way to shower w/o getting most of the bathroom wet ,as there is no closure for the shower .We thought the breakfast was AMAZING given the price of the hotel .We are healthy eaters and enjoyed the grain breads ,museli type cereal ,and fresh fruit ,which were plentiful .There were hard and soft boiled eggs and some croissants and sweet rolls as well .We also loved the non touristy shopping and eating nearby ,as well as an abundance of classy thrift stores .No curtains on hall windows was a problem as we were on the first floor ,quite visible from the court yard .The sleep area needs room darkening shades as the curtains provided minimal darkness . the metro was very close ,as was a great market . We were pretty happy overall .

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second floor .

I have stayed one week at this hotel
As per other reviwers state it is right next to Zinkensdamm T-bana
This gives you very swift access to central Stockholm
You will soon easily understand the routes and you can be in Gamla stan ( the old town ) in less than 25 mins
Hotel is on small size ,rooms can be challenging if on the 4th Floor ,mind your head !

Breakfast ok ,Beds very comfortable
Would definately recommend if you want a more local experience
Local area has huge amounts of pubs and restaurants

Room Tip: Check if you are on 4th Floor due to roof incline impact in the room

I absolutely loved Hotel Hellstens Malmgård. The location was amazing -- it was less than a block from the Zinkensdamm T-bana (subway) station. The hotel itself is one of a handful of Stockholm's remaining old mansions. The breakfast was excellent (self-service), and is served in the crypt in the basement of the hotel. As an added bonus, this hotel even has an elevator, so even if you are staying on the top (4th) floor, you don't have to carry your luggage up several flights of stairs. The room I stayed in was decorated in a lovely purple, and the bed was comfortable. Everything was very very clean. The room included a small desk and a flat-screen television. The free wi-fi is strong -- worked great, even for video chat. I highly recommend this hotel, and would stay there again myself if given the opportunity.

Room Tip: Beware the top (fourth) floor if you are tall. The attic rooms have a slanted ceilling. I am only 5...

Stayed one night at this hotel in a superior double room. A very solid, typical old swedish estate, clearly not designed to be a hotel, originally. Feels more like a hotel 'in the making', furnished with a mix of old furniters and stuff with lots of character and history, and lovely oriental carpenting on stone floors. You find spaces in the open areas functioning as storage for all these old things that are waiting to be placed. Room had surprisingly high standard for a three star hotel. Very nicely decorated, with solid wodden furnitures and floor - the kind that doesn't make a squaky sound. Large windows that open for some fresh cool air, which was needed as the room was a bit on the warm side.Nice bathroom and separate shower, but on the Really small side. A huge adult could not sit in the bathroom comfortably and close the door. Had a bit of a 'guest room in a posh country estate' feel to it. Simple breakfast, nothing to mention. No restaurant. Only snacks, drinks and coffee available in the reception area. Tons of good eating places around the corner though. Can easily see this hotel upgraded to four stars when all the furnitures has found its place, breakfast has been upgraded, and front yard made a bit more welcoming and facilitating for cars etc. Right now one has to ring a bell for the gate to be opened. It is in a very good, quiet and popular part of Stockholm called Söder, completely surrounded by apartment buildings. Feels like it is sitting in a very central backyard.

I stayed with my sister for a weekend. The room was large and very nicely decorated. Clean as well. Staff was friendly and breakfast in the cosy cellar tasted good. Quiet at night but trendy Södermalm right around the corner, the location is perfect! Subway 5min walking distance. Not cheap but worth the extra Kronen. For what you get, I don't think it was expensive. Free wifi in your room to look up final details about where you want to go.
If you want to feel like you're a person in Stockholm and not just another tourist, this is where you want to go! I'd recommend it to anyone and stay again anytime. The sort of place you would like to keep secret...
