“A quick time travel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

The Medieval Museum in Stockholm is located in the centre of Stockholm, right by the Swedish Parliament and close to the Royal Castle. The escavation is underground and will give you a glimpse of what life was life in the medieval times.

The museum is not huge, but friendly and easy for children to take in. It gives a nice break to other attractions in the town and is well worth an hour or two, especially in a rainy day.

“Great small museum for an afternoon in Stockholm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

The location is a little hidden, but worth the search. It is under ground level and the entrance is in a small park on an island below street level...but you can find it with a little effort.
The museum is a short look into medieval times...well laid out and mostly in English (some of the videos were not and the special exhibit about criminal punishments was not). I did not pay for the audio guide and thought I was not shorted. Seeing a wall built in the 1530s was the highlight and I'm glad they didnt just turn the place into a parking lot (the original plan). If you read everything it will take you a coyple of hours, but you can hit the highlights in about an hour. If you are travelling with kids, this has a lot of hands on stuff for them.
Outside in the park you can watch people salmon fishing or kayaking (in season of course).
I would rate this fairly high in the things to do in Stockholm especially on a bad weather day.

“Interesting: Good exhibits covering many topics”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

The Medieval Museum is a great "find": built around the relatively newly discovered Medieval city wall. Very cool story! The museum layout creatively walks you through a variety of aspects of Medieval life: building styles, aspects of everyday life, the role of the church, children's games, clothes, the rules: "many pigs but only one cow ", types of punishment (ewwwwwwwwww), medical "care" (YIKES!), shipping (including the ship!), the plague (of course), and war. Also, the growth and development of Stockholm during this period is well covered.

There is actually quite a bit here for a small museum. The exhibits are well layed out with some use of multi-media to keep it interesting, Overall, documentation/signage is good with both Swedish and English (exception: one section had a number of videos, but no English).

Skip the audio headsets and save the 20 SEK: not much extra information/added context.

Nice surprise: The 100 SEK entry fee includes entry to the Stockholm City Museum and re-entry to the Medieval Museum until Jan 2015 (1 year!)! There are a number of interesting events and exhibit changes through the year -- so a nice little extra for people who live here! We hope to be back and will hang on to our ticket just in case!

We visited on a Tuesday during the business week: very few people. We like to read things and explore all the cases, so we were there a full 3 hours. Many others can glide through much more quickly. Depends on your interests. :-)

“Very modern museum to present a very old subject”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

This museum deals with what could be a slightly dull subject in a very modern and friendly way. A small entrance hall opens up in to an expansive main room, with the remains of Stockholm's original city wall as its impressive centerpiece. Other features include full size replicas of different buildings throughout the city's medieval history and, on select days, live costumed performers bringing historic customs to life. Depending on your typical browsing speed you could spend everything from one to three or four hours looking at the main displays and artefacts.

“Very interesting especially for people that like time travelling”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

It is a very well set museum, with history about Stockholm and Sweden, many years ago, that life was not easy, and surviving need a lot of effort. After the visit on this museum, even if you knew nothing about how people lived in the middle ages, you will have then an idea. And especially in Scandinavia, that the environment was not hostile, and the source of food and heat was a daily struggle. The miniatures in the museum, the old findings of the wall (ruins), the skeletons, everything is interesting and easy to pay attention to some things, that might never watch them on TV, movies, or read on books.
