“One of it's kind museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

If you're interested in early 20th century cultcure this is must.
Really a hidden gem. Much better and far more interesting than any of the castles. Make sure to get a guided tour though; available both in English and Swedish.

“Interesting museum for a short visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

I visited the Hallwyl Museum by myself on a Friday afternoon and found it quite enjoyable. I did not take a tour because I speak English and I think that there was no English speaking tour at that time. The museum does provide detailed explanations of each room in a number of languages, so you can do a self guided tour. The house is really quite beautiful, and I loved how it was preserved (they had kept an original waste basket- still full of the original owners discarded papers-- makes it seem very authentic, cool!). Of course the furnishings were stunning.

The downside about not being on a tour is that you can only see one floor of the house (I was under the impression that you can see upper floors if you are with a guide- but did not figure that out until later). So just being able to see one floor I did not need so much time. There was also a display of clothing from Downton Abbey going on but I don't watch it so it wasn't particularly interesting.

The museum is in a great location (Hamngatan) so worth checking out if you are in the area and looking for a quick stop.

“Extraordinary private palace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

You don't find many buildings of this kind in Stockholm. It's a private house in a very central position, built ca 1900-1910. It's very big and was meant to be used by only two persons (plus servants of course). It has many rooms and is quite modern, electric lights everywhere for example. It was decided early to keep everything in place which makes it interesting to observe. You don't have to join a tour to see it. This winter we had an exhibition of dresses worn i Downton Abbey (British TV series). Interior decoration is lavish and on the top floor there is a small collection of paintings including Breughel and Cranach (if my memory serves me well).

“Really enjoyed the Downton Abbey exhibition!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

I went to Hallwylska for the Downton Abbey exhibition. It is a beautiful house right in the middle of Stockholm (on Hamngatan). You would hardly notice it though if you were walking by. They exhibited clothes from the Downton Abbey tv series which I enjoy watching. The clothes were incredibly beautiful and detailed. The exhibition compared clothes, traditions, servant numbers and conditions etc of Downton Abbey and the Hallwylska household. Worth a visit, particularly for Downton Abbey fans!
