“Eating at the Royal Viking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

I stayed at the Royal Viking on my first visit to Sweden in 1994 and it remains my favourite Stockholm hotel, mainly due to its incomparable location in the heart of the city.
The restaurant originally had an Italian orientation and I ceased to use it after it changed to a somewhat pretentious establishment with an overwhelming sea-food orientation, emphasized by the name "Stockholms Fisk".
During my most recent visit, at the end of August 2012, I dined there for the first time with two Swedish friends, more out of necessity than choice as they were operating to a tight time schedule.
Whilst one of my friends opted for one of the only two non sea-food choices on the menu, duck, which was presented so under-cooked as to be almost raw and hence inedible, both his wife and I were delighted with our, as it turned out wiser, choices of fish and the price of the duck was graciously waived. Service was excellent and I shall certainly eat there again on my next visit to Stockholm.

Room Tip: This review was about the restaurant but I have stayed in a wide variety of rooms, all of which I fo...

Travelled to Stockholm for work, and this hotel was very conveniently located to the main train terminal.
Best advice I can give you is book a double room - their single rooms overloo the central atrium and are not much bigger than a bathroom.
Moved to a larger room with a bigger bed and it was perfectly adequate.
No bath - just shower, but lovely big shower. Toiletries provided. Pet hate - facecloth provided first day and then had to request each day after that - I mean, if you're not supplying it, don't have it there on the first day!
Work desk was rather low to the ground - and I'm only 5-7 - can't imagine anybody taller managing to get their knees under it.
Breakfast was great value and available later at the weekends.
Eating in the bar or room service was expensive for what you got - could definitely eat better elsewhere.
They have a sky-bar on the top floor - didn't manage to experience it as it was very busy most nights - some rather dodgy looking characters in there, but that could have been just my suspicious nature.
Sauna, Jacuzzi & gym in the basement - given the hotel's central location, they have squeezed a lot in here - the pool is not for anybody interested in doing a serious swim.
Staff were excellent - so helpful and informative - and they even kindly gave me an umbrella as it rained the entire time I was there.

Room Tip: Don't book a single room - they're tiny!

We [couple] stayed here for 4 days - attending a meeting. I don't know if other rooms were like ours - crummy, cramped, dark, dingy, musty smell, worn-out look of furniture and beddings, forget about lack of day light in the room - even turning on the lamps in the day time was not enough to read or locate objects in the room properly - bitterly disappointed and let down - certainly nowhere near money's worth. Breakfast was good - nothing 'royal' or exceptional. Ambience in the lobby and public places in the Hotel cheerless - at best OK. Staff efficient and OK. Certainly Room No 580 is not the room to be in there. What if any, was good about it ? Sure - the location - close to most of the tourist hot-spots / transport facilities like train [Central station] bus etc. was ideal.

Room Tip: Try for a room not facing interior courtyard -

Enjoyed our stay. Very nice breakfast. The junior suites are really spacious and there was plenty of space for our two children. However, the wifi didn't work properly in our room, which was a shame. The sauna and pool were also a great thing when staying with kids.

The registration process was painfully slow, with queues. The reception wasn't sure whether "the superior bedroom" was ready at 4 pm. Your car is "valeted" which means they take the key and garage it somewhere for 39 Swedish kroner a night! You're told you have to give them half an hour's notice if you want your car or wish to retrieve something from it. The atmosphere nearby is as unsavoury as Kings Cross in London can be, so much so that the hotel closes the side entrance near the central station in the afternoon/early evening even though it is not far from the Ahlens store (equivalent of John Lewis in Oxford Street). The hotel itself is massive but strange with a huge and menacingly dark foyer where it is impossible to see or read anything and a "Sky Bar" which claims a view over Stockholm which is singularly unimpressive and which charges 141 Kroner for a glass of red wine with 40 cl of beer. The breakfast (extra at 112 Sw. Kroner per person) is OK but it is too crowded and disorganised. The bedroom and shower room were of a good standard but the air conditioning was very noisy and no windows could be opened because of the atrium (?). The wifi was slow and erratic despite the fact that we were on the business floor.

Located within walking distance to Gamla Stan(old town) and close to public transportation, this is an ideal location in Stockholm. Hotel is modern, rooms small but nicely appointed, staff friendly and efficient. Cafeteria style breakfast area with mediocre food is a definite negative but there is a nice coffee shop immediately adjacent to the hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the water

It is a very centrally located hotel. I will give it that. But that may also ge one of the problems for the property. When travelling solo or for business I really like to find areas where you can sit down with a drink and my computer and relax. Maybe do a little people watching etc. The Royal Viking just doesn't have that.

They have a roof top bar that is very small and crowded. Also a bit to "cool" unless you are planning to paint the town red. They also have a lobby bar, but there is just people running around all the time. Compared to the Sheraton, nearby, it is simply a huge step down.

And the room... I had booked a spacios room. I got it too. With a view of the city. On the third floor. And I have to say it looked awful. Last brush up must have been in the 80's. The bathroom and shower had so much stains and dark mushy areas that I managed about 5 minutes. They gracefully allowed me a room at one of the refurbished floors, but I had to make do with a cramped single room with an inward view. The price was not adjusted accordingly.

The new room, although very small, was clearly better with a nice bathroom. But I wouldn't call it nice. It had a nice private bar but it could have been stocked better. I mean, what is there to loose?

So the judgement is that if you can get a deal, or afford, the Sheraton, then go there. And to Radisson; refurbish the rest, improve service in the lobby bar (table serving) and create some quieter areas.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 5th floor or higher as these are refurbished.
