We have just returned from spending four nights at this hotel. We have visited Stockholm many times before, but can say unequivocally that both in location terms , and for its overall ambience, this hotel is now our favourite, to which we definitely intend to return.
The island of Skeppsholmen is delightfully situated. Despite being very close to the city centre- easily walkable, or via the 65 bus stopping two minutes away - or alternatively using the regular ferry to Gamla Stan in one direction or the zoo and design museum in the other - you nonetheless genuinely fell as if you are in a semi rural location.
The island was long kept for the exclusive use of the Swedish navy, so there has been little or no new construction on it for over a century. The now redundant naval buildings seem now to be being put to practical use, whether as arts centres, theatres, workshops or museums; so the whole island feels so laid back, rather like a deeply uncluttered rural university campus out of term time.
The hotel itself is the only one permitted on the island. It is a delight : both friendly and efficient, offering excellent breakfasts and good evening meals. And universally charming and attentive staff.
Based on advice from others on this website, we opted for a top floor room in Building 2. The ceilings in our initial room were in places so low in the eaves as to be genuinely uncomfortable (and would in our native Britain be illegal!). But following continuous problems with our DVD player, we were upgraded for our final three nights into a far more spacious room , with even more wonderful views - and sufficient other space to obviate the low eaves problem.
Just one grouse : our initial room had a queen bed, and a double duvet which was simply not large enough for the bed. I gather this is a regular complaint . It really ought to be addressed.
Opt for one of the higher floors.
