We loved the Grand Hotel in Kristianstad where we felt so welcome as Swedish Americans returning to our homeland, Skane. Every single person at the hotel was outgoing and extremely helpful from the general manager, Kenneth Hoffstrom, to the wait staff and night clerks.
Kristianstad is a beautiful small city with an exquisite, elegant church occupying the block between the hotel and the train station. For travelers arriving and departing by train, the location is ideal and yet the train station is quiet because Kristianstad is the end of the line.
Our room was lovely with exceptionally comfortable Swedish beds with "mattress toppers", immaculate bathroom, and wireless internet at no charge. The hotel has adopted an extremely responsible attitude toward the environment as seen in its policy to allow guests staying more than one night to choose whether the towels should be replaced with new towels or not in an effort to conserve water.
The breakfast buffet was extensive with delicious foods such as a selection of herrings, cheeses and meats, eggs, bacon and potatoes, muesli and half a dozen kinds of yogurt, fruit compote, breads and muffins. A variety of Swedish cookies was presented each morning next to the coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
In the lobby a desktop computer was available around the clock for guests to use to access the internet. The lobby itself provided an excellent meeting place for guests waiting for friends or relatives.
We loved Kristianstad so much that we are already planning another trip there to explore the city and to stay at the Grand Hotel. From the outside the hotel seems unassuming but inside it's a real gem, a warm and cozy home away from home.
