“Nowhere to leave bags if pub is shut”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

We were here in December so it was pretty cold outside. The big problem we had was with check in/out, which is only possible during pub opening hours. Unfortunately for us we hadn't looked into this and found ourselves out on the streets on a Sunday afternoon with 2 cases and nowhere to go (pretty much everything was shut). This wouldn't be a problem in summer but when it's snowing and -15 it's not ideal. Luckily we managed to shelter in a burger bar for a fair while, but I would advise against arriving or leaving on a Sunday.
Other than that the hotel is fine, the rooms were clean and fresh. The breakfast was fairly basic but adequate.
If we hadn't had the check in/out issue then I'd give it an extra point.

It wasn't made very clear at point of booking that the check-in time follows strictly the pub's opening time, which is 4 pm on most days.

There is no place to deposit your luggage if you arrive before the stipulated 4 pm. In this day and age, it should be easy for hotel to use a security code to allow guests to retrieve keys, most hotels without a 24hr receptionist do that. I arrived at 1230 pm, stood in the cold with luggage and was upset that the information wasn't made clear.

I eventually walked 10 mins with the luggage to the tourist information centre. You can deposit your bags there for a fee.

The rooms are new and clean. The pub where we had breakfast had a very bad oily stench though. Time for a refurbishment.

Bishops was an unexpected find. Unexpected because Kiruna is Sweden's northern most city and we expected to pay high prices for very little service or quality. The hotel has very good quality rooms, clean, modern bathrooms and very warm. Heated floor in the bathroom, heating controls in each room and windows that open for fresh air. It was around minus 20 when we visited and hotel heating and amenities were very good. The breakfast that is included in the room price is excellent. A typical Scandinavian offering of 4+ breads, soft and hard boiled eggs, selection of cheeses, fresh cucumber and tomato, fresh fruit, dried fruit and nuts, cereal, yoghurt, coffee, tea and juice. Everything was very fresh and well prepared. We also ate dinner from the menu one night and it too was very good. We have stayed at Bishops twice now and I would recommend it again. The location is perfect if you are picking up a car, travelling by bus or train. It is also very close to the Tour Guide departure points. And H&M is in the building in case you need to shop! Arrival time and departure time do require a bit of planning as the operation of the hotel is contingent on the opening hours of the pub so early access with bags/ or leaving bags after check-out is the only problem at Bishops.

An unsual layout with the rooms access slightly away from the bar. It felt a little like serviced apartments since there was no "reception" when the bar closed. Check in and out very easy nevertheless.
The rooms modern low cost style (eg soap in dispenser) clean and quite big especially the twin bedded room which seemed well set up for wheel chairs with a large wet room shower and grab handles for the loo.
The pub was busy with good atmosphere and well cooked pub style food. We just managed to get a table but when fully booked you can take food back to room. We stayed one Friday night on route to the airport so did not check out any alternatives. Driving ourselves we found it following signs to the "Centrum", pub front noticeable on the corner of a shopping centre. Easy parking close to hotel.
Breakfast did not include a cooked option apart from boiled eggs and toast, plenty of everything else though.
Overall a good choice of accomodation for us with adult children, probably less suitable for families with small children with the only public area being the bar

We stayed here for one night as we were leaving from Kiruna airport. The town is quite large, but not too busy, and they have a mainly mining industry. You can take a tour of the mines during the summer months. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants. Shops closed quite early on a Saturday, and the town was dead on Sunday morning. There is a tourist information office who were helpful about bus times to the airport (50 SEK per person). The hotel was a strange set up, but nice. A fake English pub called the Bishops Arms which was attached to a small shopping mall, with the hotel rooms above the mall. You had to go into the mall area to access the stairs and lift to the rooms. That said, the room was gorgeous. Huge and spacious, clean and with high ceilings and nice furnishings. There was a TV and the Swedish channels screen quite a few American shows and films still with the original soundtrack and Swedish subtitles. So there were quite a few things to choose from to watch. There was an en-suite bathroom which had a shower. Our room was adapted for disabled guests. Sleep quality was good. The room was nice and quiet. The pub downstairs offered dinner for about £14 for a main course which was not bad for Sweden, and cheaper than the restaurant down the road. The food was of really good standard and was delicious, and they served very sizeable portions. There were three vegetarian options on the menu. I had the pasta with shiitake mushrooms. Breakfast was included and was again served in the pub downstairs. There was a choice of cereals, bread, toast, cheese, meats, eggs, yoghurts and fruit with coffee, fruit teas (no English breakfast) and juices. It was a little disorganised – they had run out of most things – cutlery, plates, dishes, cups, coffee, hot water. The tables were piling up with dirty dishes, so several people (ourselves included) had to move the last people’s items out of the way in order to find a place to sit down. But the breakfast did the job. Just a little more organisation needed to make things run a bit more smoothly. I would stay here again on future trips.

Really nice, quite quirky hotel that I'd recommend to others. To start it's not that easy to find as the front of house really is a pub! The reception is simply at the end of the Bar! Not really an issue though as we got checked in with no issues at all. The bar is a pastiche of a traditional English pub, complete with horse brasses and framed old maps of various English counties. Won't suit all tastes, but quite fun. Lively crowd in most nights with a good atmosphere. There is also a small 'library' area off the main bar that is a bit quieter but does fill up quickly.
Once checked in, to get to the rooms you go out of the bar, through a shopping centre (no really!), and into a lobby with access to the rooms on the upper floor. It is all card key access so no issues with security. Again, not an issue as a shopping centre in Kiruna is hardly that busy. The rooms are silent (or at least mine was), despite being above the bar.
The rooms are a good size (with more English pastiche framed hunting pictures), with a typically Scandinavian (read modern, contemporary, stylish) bathroom. I had a bath with shower over it but talking to others, there are some rooms with wet rooms only and no bath. Might be worth asking when booking if you particularly want a bath.
I can see what some people say about the cleanliness of the rooms. Mine was 8/10 - not sparkling, but also not as immaculate as some hotels I've stayed in.

The food is pretty good, basically pub food (unsurprisingly!), the reindeer burger is particularly good. Not that cheap though and there are cheaper (and more expensive..) places to eat in town that are just as good.
Breakfast is quite amusing as it is the usual hotel buffet style but it's actually served on the bar! Bit different and just adds to the experience and is so nice to have something different from the run of the mill big hotel chains.

Stayed for 3 nights and room was warm, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good and staff very friendly Reception open at 3pm which was fine as we'd arrived on the overnight train from Stockholm - would definitely recommend. Really liked the English pub atmosphere and was the best place to spend an evening, Good pub style food.

Room Tip: Some rooms are larger but you would have to check with hotel. We didnt need a view and were happy wi...
