We had been sightseeing in the Amelianborg area and we were on our way to see the Little Mermaid. It was getting towards 14.00 and we were getting hungry. We looked at a few cafes and restaurants on Esplanaden but did not fancy any of them, we walked around the corner into Bredgade and came across this lovely restaurant.
Café Petersborg is one of the oldest restaurants in Copenhagen has an interesting décor and the dining area is composed of a number of rooms. We were given a table in a very busy room where there was a lot of Danish men chatting away and enjoying themselves. The waiters did ask if we would like to move to a quieter table but we were enjoying the atmosphere and decided to stay put.
The waiters were very friendly and helpful. Our waiter asked if we had tried a typical Danish lunch, we said no and he helped us choose. Jackie had two Smørrebrød (open sandwiches). One was warm fillet of fish with shrimps, asparagus and mayonnaise and the other was matured cheese (very stong!) with rum and jelly (the rum is served in a small bottle!). Both are served on buttered rye bread. Jackie found two plenty enough. I chose the Petersborg plate which was served on a glass plate. There was , in the order they should be eaten, pickled herring , warm filet of fish, Danish meatball, Roast Beef, Ham, Smoked Salmon and two different cheeses all with different salads and dressings. This was served with six slices of rye bread and two slices of white bread. Lard is used only for the herring and butter with the other dishes. The waiter said it was traditional to eat the herring with aquavit so I ordered a glass. By the time I had worked my way through all this I was feeling very full and satisfied. I even enjoyed the herring which I wasn't looking forward to. We had a small beer each with the meal.
Our fellow diners had left and the room was a lot quieter, another waiter then started to chat to us.
We really enjoyed our lunch here and is well worth a visit if nearby. The total cost was 415 Krone including the beers and aquavit. Reasonable for Copenhagen and we were so full we didn't need much to eat that evening!
