“The management make the difference”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2010

I planned this trip as a surprise city break for our wedding anniversary, and as Denmark has an expensive reputation I wanted something of good value but with a bit of class too. The hotel is reasonably well-placed on the edge of the tourist zone, and only about 10mins walk from the main station.
The main things that made the difference for our stay were; the welcome, the help and general niceness of the management and staff. The desk was always open (a bit like in a good hostel) and the breakfasts are amazing; filling and healthy (don't expect bacon and eggs!).
I would recommend this place to those who want a nice quiet stay, or those who have very small kids. The hotel had a baby bed and always were very kind with our 1yr old daughter.

We stayed at Hotel Guldmeden for 2 nights with our 10 month old baby.

Just as the reviews from other traveler had suggested, the hotel is centrally located yet quiet. It's a 10 min walk from the central train station where most hotels are located. I'm so happy that we chose this one as it's not directly in "tourists central". We can walk to most of the attractions on foot.

There is a big supermarket two doors down (greatly useful when traveling with a baby) and tons of restaurants. My favourite is LeLe (2 blocks away) -a trendy Vietnamese restaurant with fantastic food and dining environment. It also has a take out on the same block as the hotel.

The hotel itself is very clean and very tastefully decorated. I really appreciate the effort in the interior design and enjoyed the Balinees decor very much. Beds and beddings are very comfortable and the room opens to the back alley and is very quiet (except you can hear people walking in the hall way -given the old building and the acoustic in the hallway not sufficiently muffled).

The breakfast room looks like a hidden trendy bar and the breakfast served was excellent. Some reviews had said it's small and pricey. However, we found although it's a small buffet, the food is exceptionally fresh with good quality.

The wi-fi internet was for $2 per day which is fine but it was down jhalf of the time we were there. We had to pay extra for the parking but that was not a big deal and we appreciate the fact that it does have parking as you don't need a car around the city but we did drive ourselves up from Hamburg. We also liked the toiletory provided (very nice organic brand) and the eco aspect of the hotel.

By the way, we think we got great value from the rates we gotten! I booked through Otel and the rates are very reasonable.

We are happy we stayed there and will definitely stay there again.
An additional tip for families traveling with small babies: there's a baby store called (BabyHouse) just around the block towards the Frederiksberg Alle and it has everything you need just in case something's missing. We had to buy a rain cover for the stroller while we were there as it rained so much! Baby food is abandoned at the Fortex supermarket mentioned before.

Not the easiest of hotels to spot, tucked away behind shop frontage on the busy Vesterbrogade, but our room was more then adequate in terms of space for my wife and I and our 2 sons (10 & 13 years old). It was very tastefully and comfortably furnished, breakfast was Scandanavian, plentiful and delicious, including wonderful organic vanilla yoghurt, whole almonds and, best of all, organic strawberry juice. Only about 15 minutes walk from Tivoli etc and with some very good butchers, deli's etc close by, the location was fine for us. But the biggest plus for us was the staff; Gunn, in particular, was wonderful - our drive from Bruges (14 hours!) was beset with problems and so we knew we would arrive after midnight, but calling Gunn en route, she explained how to enter the hotel at that time, how to access our pre-booked parking, and she left us a tray with filled rolls, fruit, beer and fruit juice at no extra charge. She was also delightful to meet in person; her colleagues were also very helpful. I would stay here again without doubt.

The hotel is above and behind shops on a busy main road in a not terribly attractive part of the city. But it has the advantage of being within walking distance of most of the sights and there is no real need to use public transport. We requested a quiet room which was in the annexe at the rear of the hotel. It was comfortable with good decor (better than the Guldsmeden in Arhus) and clean, although the shower had no door so it was an art to keep the bathroom floor dry. Although the room was generally quiet when we opened the window for fresh air there was noise from close adjacent buildings. Accessing the annexe in the pouring rain involved dodging a downpour from a leaking gutter and crossing a yard full of puddles. And puddles also formed inside the annexe through an open grill arrangement. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and upon arrival we were greeted with very welcome coffee. Breakfast was an excellent buffet with fresh fruit, cereals and a good selection of very tasty meats, cheeses and breads. Plain yoghurt with honey and almonds was particularly fine. Perhaps our chosen month of August meant the hotel was particularly busy, but on 2 mornings there was no available table for breakfast. And the young clientele with young families made breakfast a noisy affair, along with the tapping of laptop keyboards. Being in my early 60s I felt distinctly old and slightly out of place. At £172 per night (including breakfast and good parking) for the two of us this was our most expensive hotel in Scandinavia. If I visit the city again I'll try a different hotel.

On the positive side, the room was reasonably sized and nicely furnished. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was fine. Only average location, something closer to City Hall Square would be preferable. There are not many eating options close to the hotel. The principal complaint was the noise. We were in the annex because the clerk said it would be quieter than the main building--apparently, there is a lot of street noise in the main building. The annex has it own noise problems from adjacent buildings. Since it was August, with windows being open in our room and in the adjacent buildings, there was noise all night long. We were not able to sleep well at all. Second problem, we could not enjoy the balcony because there was a large pool of water covering the floor from a recent rain. We were at the hotel four nights and no one bothered to clear out the water.

This hotel is being advertised improperly using a deceiving Carlton name that do not appear anywhere at the hotel itself. It is a private hotel that should bear a maximum of 2 stars, taking into account the conditions of the building, the elevator (there is a dentist on the 2nd floor !?) and the facilities. On the positive side, the personnel is really friendly and helpful and the basic rooms are clean. But please note that for only 8 euros more I slept at the Marriott Copenhagen only a few days before with a room overlooking the river...

We stayed at the Carlton Hotel Guldsmeden for two nights in June 2010.

The reservation/check-in process was fine. I made the reservations directly on the hotel site. We were able to check in early.

We had a double standard room. It was fine for us. Comfortable and clean. It's an older property, with nice modern furnishings, but older bathrooms, etc. The shower arrangement is a bit odd, with no shower curtain, so one has to wipe the floor. We were in the back building, away from the road, so it was quiet. The Internet worked fine.

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel. There are a couple good bakeries up the street to get breakfast and coffee.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the main train station, which we found very convenient. We made our next connection to Stockholm by train, so we were able to check out, check our bags at the train station, rent bikes and spend most of the day biking around town before catching the 17:30 train.

Overall, a very comfortable place and a very good value for the rate we got.
