“Great service, great valu for money..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2010

I came to Copenhagen for a few nights and found a good offer at The Carlton Hotel. From the first moment I was surprised what a great value i got for my money. Very nice and warm staff and charming rooms close to the city center. Dont get surprised by the strange entrance, once you get inside you will find a true perle.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2010

I stayed for five nights at this hotel and still find it difficult to sum it up.

The building is disappointing. There is no main entrance which is disconcerting when you arrive for the first time. The entry is a door down an alleyway which is controlled by a key pad or a bell. The reception desk is on the first floor, in between the kitchen and the breakfast room. I spent some time in three different rooms and found cord carpets with patches worn through to the floorboards in each of them - and not very comfortable to walk on in bare feet. The furniture was rudimentary - no doubt having 'rustic charm!' With these points in mind I think they would be lucky to gain two star status.

But, the other side of the story! The rooms were well heated and the bathroom had underfloor heating - which given that the temperature was below freezing the whole time I was there was quite a bonus. The bed was very comfortable and there was a mini-bar, safe and multi-channel TV. Everything was very clean - impressively so.

Breakfast was stricly continental - with choices of cereals, fruit juices, bread, cheeses, meats, fruit etc. and every effort was made to ensure supplies were maintained. In line with a three star hotel. At 11.95 DKR you could certainly get good value here - especially taking into accout the general price level in Copenhagen.

The staff were exceptionally helpful and went out of their way to deal with any problems that arose.

I would not recommend this hotel to a friend - unless I was sure that they would appreciate the individual nature of this hotel - although I would be prepared to come back here myself - but in summer next time!

All in all, we had a very pleasant stay at Carlton Hotel Guldsmeden. The hotel is situated a 10 min walk from the central station and we walked everywhere. We had a room in the annex building, which is in the yard, and we could not here any traffic noise from the busy street. The staff was friendly.

This is an excellent hotel with lots of character and attention to detail. Rooms are nicely decorated, with very comfortable beds. My room was spotless clean, and everything in my room worked (which is very rare). The room was more 4-star, so it was good value for money.
I asked for a quiet room and got one in the annex at the back, looking over trees and a backyard, which was very quiet.
The breakfast was good, served in a nicely decorated room, although a bit overpriced at 95 DK (about £12).
I arrived in late afternoon and had several hours to spare, so I appreciated that the TV had many programs in English, including TCM (so I watched my favourite 'Singing in the Rain').
The only problem was that the internet didn't always work, but there was a computer with free internet available for guest next to the reception.
The place is also a bit tricky to find, situated in an ordinary house with a front that could do with some work. It was also a bit tricky to find the reception, which must be the only downside that deprives them of four-stars.
But overall, I will definitely stay there again!

Stayed with girlfriend - double bed. 4 nights. Some of the best prices available in Copenhagen based on our Expedia searches.

Location: 8-10 minute walk west of Central Station and most tourist areas (tivoli, stroget). The neighborhood is a bit more residential but Vesterbrogade is a busy street. Fun area with some good restaurants. 10 minute walk southeast to Carlsburg Brewery.

Hotel common areas: lobby area is charming - breakfast not included and did not indulge. Laptop computer with internet access available in the lobby. Staff was extremely helpful and significantly exceeded our expectations. Elevator was a bit small and old (we stayed on the 5th floor and used quite frequently)

Hotel room: 5th floor has vaulted ceilings which cut into a portion of room, making these areas difficult to walk through (hit my head once). Room size was average and it was kept quite clean. Plenty of closet space and bathroom was kept in decent shape (slight problem with shower drainage). All bathroom toiletries provided. The rooms have an older, more traditional charm with an interesting, modern-ish decor.

I would mostly recommend this hotel for its friendly/helpful staff and very reasonable prices. I guess we weren't very impressed with the quality of the room based on other reviews and prictures on TripAdvisor. Nonetheless, I would stay here again in a heart beat. Must get back to Copenhagen.

We booked this hotel as it had a 'family' room. It turned out to be a double room with 2 extra beds squeezed in. The extra beds were not much better than truckle beds and were very narrow. Also they were squeezed in under the eaves so the head room was poor. If a hotel advertises a room to be suitable for a family (and charges extra for this), it should be comfortable for all members of the family, including the children.

The room was also very hot – unbearably so with four people squashed into the room. Tiny window, no air-con and a rather rickety fan which we had to leave on all night. Not great safety-wise with small children in the room!

We need more hotels where a family of four can stay comfortably without having to take 2 doubles. Pls see my review of Suite Hotel in Rouen for an exemplary hotel in this respect.

Finally, they calculated the final bill in pounds sterling and not Danish kronors - 'for your and our convenience'. We were rushed (with taxi waiting outside) so paid up, but on hindsight this is potentially sharp practice. They should have given us the option with info about the rate of exchange used so that we could have made up our own minds.

I loved the breakfast! I can get passed the heater that was warming the globe (it's denmark) but the breakfast took me an hour every day because I could not get enough.
Nice beds as well.
