“Nice hotel, being renovated”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

This hotel got the right idea by promoting eco friendly, quaint, clean atmosphere and it has a very helpful lady at front desk. For American travelers, this hotel maybe is too self-serviced, but most the guests from "local" areas seem to be fine. The value is good. The location Is 15-20 mins by foot to the train station or down town. The only issue is the renovation making the court yard unpleasant.

Room Tip: ask for 3rd floor, top floor is hot in the summer and it is attic, low ceiling.

We spent two nights in Copenhagen at the Hotel Guldsmeden. As with most Scandinavian hotels, the bathroom and the hotel room are small. The bed was very comfortable. I am extremely picky about cleanliness and the room was very clean. Our room was made up after the first night as well. The wi-fi worked in the room (although not on the balcony) and the decorations in the room were pleasing. There was a refrigerator in the room which was nice since we bought a bottle of wine and a couple of beers. One night we brought back a pizza and had it on the balcony, which was a nice evening. We found the room to be comfortable, but extremely small. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There appeared to be renovations going on, but we never heard them. Parking was easy once we knew where we were to park. I think they had a reception room where you could buy a beer or a glass of wine, but I did not see any prices posted. I wish places would do that more. I don't like to ask, but I won't order without a price. The bathroom had nice soaps. there was actually a body shampoo, hair shampoo and hair conditioner. Most places we only found body/hair shampoo combination and no conditioners. I think I also remember a towel bar that was a warmer. The only complaint is that the showers do not have curtains and we tended to splash outside of the shower into the rest of the bath area. The location of the hotel was good. We were maybe 6 or 7 short blocks from Tivoli and the beginning of the sightseeing attractions. My husband and I like to walk and found this to be a good location. Many restaurants and stores in the area. I would happily stay at this hotel again.

First, the good news: The Guldsmeden (which means "dragonfly") Carlton had interesting decor and a fine location about 15 minutes' walk to the center of Copenhagen and on major bus lines. The breakfast was very good (though overpriced at 27 dollars U.S. per person, a fact that was not listed anywhere or disclosed to us). The mattress was very comfortable. Our room had an iMac on the wall instead of a TV (but it was impossible to read email or web pages except by standing on the floor in front of it).

The bad news: No phone in room (so no wake-up call service), no light over the mirror in the bathroom, no facial tissues, terrible and unreliable wi-fi, no safe in the room, no desk service before 7:00 am, and worst of all, you must use two hands to open the door, which would be nearly impossible in the event of a fire. Our two rooms smelled like spoiled Thai food.
I would not stay here again.

Room Tip: We (two couples) stayed in the newly renovated rooms near the front. The off-gassing in the rooms w...

We visited Copenhagen in February. The hotel was very near the station and easy to access. The rooms and the bathroom were attractive and the staff were helpful. You do not receive the same type of room for your money in Copenhagen as you may in say, Paris or Rome, but that is not to say it was not a nice stay -it was the same value as other hotels in Copenhagen of a similar type and the deisgn was lovely, just perhaps a bit less luxurious than some may expect. We did not have the breakfast but we to a nearby café- Granola, which recommend for breakfast or lunch.

The Guldsmeden was...well, it was fine. We booked a "double superior" room (although tempted to book a "double standard," just because of the name), which comes with the choice of a balcony or a tub. We picked the balcony, and our room turned out to be on the second floor with a view of the parking lot...not quite what we had in mind. The good: the room was fairly quiet (good), the bed decent in terms of comfort (although essentially two twin mattresses set together), it had wood floors (no scary carpet), and the hotel is in a convenient location. The bad: there's no way to keep the bathroom floor from getting soaked (no shower curtain or door), the bathroom has very little storage space (for toiletries), the pillows were really flat and lumpy, and the lighting was poor. The housekeeping was slipshod--splatters on our mirror remained there for days, no one removed our recycling, we received no clean glasses, the pigeon poop on the balcony remained there for the whole visit, and no one mopped the bathroom floors.

Copenhagen's a very expensive city, and so this hotel was about as decent as we could afford. But if we return, I think we'll try to find a nicer place.

Room Tip: If you get a double superior, ask for the tub rather than the balcony.

The location of the hotel is excellent. It is in Vesterbro, a trendy part of Copenhagen, yet still just a short walk from the train station and historical center. It is also a great spot for runners, almost adjacent to the lake path. Beyond the location, the price was also a big draw, especially in a pricey city like Copenhagen.
The hotel had a certain cozy charm, especially my top floor room which had an attic feel in a quaint, personable way. It really felt more like a home than a hotel, which was very much appreciated. However there were also some less pleasant quirks such as very thin curtains which led to sunlight flooding my face and waking me up at 5:30am, challenging acoustics (there was a large - at least by the sound of them - group arriving near midnight one night whose every movement in the hall could be heard in my room), and a great deal of construction being done.

My top choice in Copenhagen. I have stayed here more times than I can remember.

It's small, friendly, great value, v. comfortable and stylish. Overall: lovely.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms but ask for a double if you are traveling alone.
