“I love their breakfast!”

Scandic Hotel Sydhavnen

If you are deciding on a hotel in Copenhagen, you may want to consider the Scandic Sydhavnen as an option. Not your typical hotel, this eco-friendly hotel has IKEA style rooms, free high-speed wireless internet connections and a great free breakfast buffet. Rooms are clean, have hardwood floors instead of carpet, trash cans designed for recycling, and a very comfortable bed. The disadvantage of this hotel is that it is not located in the heart of the city so plan on catching the train to visit all the attractions...the train ride is not very long. Not the best neighborhood, the hotel is located near an industrial yard which is a strange place to place a hotel but I think this hotel is used mainly by business travelers instead of tourists. If you want to eat out, there is a very limited number of places to eat besides the hotel restaurant. All we could find was a pizza joint and an Indian restaurant (Punjabi) located next to each other. We went to Punjabi for dinner and enjoyed their food. It was definitely cheaper than eating at the hotel. The free breakfast buffet was awesome! I was impressed at how big it was and the diversity of the food. There's something for everyone. Overall we loved our stay and would recommend this place if you don't mind the inconvenience of catching the train to the heart of the city.

An American living in Europe

My husband and I stayed at the Scandic Sydhavnen over Easter weekend and found it to be fine. I had a special price of just over $100 USD including breakfast (which was the one of the best buffets I have had in Europe). The location is good - just a few minutes from Copenhagen Centrum. If you are driving in, just follow Copenhagen C and you will see the hotel on your left just past a business park with Nokia and Mercedes. The room was clean, but the shampoo/soap dispenser (which is always empty in every hotel room in Europe) was filthy when we removed it to squeeze more soap out. All in all, a good deal for a very expensive city.

The Scandic Sydhavnen would have to rate as one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. It is definitely the Faulty Towers on the Scandinavian region (without the laughs). We booked a double bed room several weeks before leaving Australia yet it seemed like a big surprise to the staff that we actually meant it ~ yes there were two of us and we did want a bed we could both sleep in. The bed was a double bed but the hotel staff had made it up as a single bed. We got housekeeping up to make up a double bed; requesting double sheets, two pillows etc but (our fault I know) we didn’t actually say we wanted two towels, or cups so that meant another call to housekeeping. After the late arrival and all the fuss with setting up the room we were in no mood to have anything other than a small room service meal and go to bed. Problem was, there was not room service menu in the room. A call to room service added to the frustration: I was told that the room service menu was being changed and the new one hadn’t been printed yet. I could get dressed and come down to the restaurant and order there if I liked (I didn’t like). Alternatively they could make whatever I liked, until I asked for what I liked and was told I could have that! It turned out that what I could have was tasteless, overpriced and cold by the time it was delivered (chips by the way to the Scandic Sydhavnen “chef” means potato crisps still in their packet!)
The next morning we were harassed in the breakfast as the staff started stacking chairs in our area of the restaurant (the area without customers was left unmolested) until the reception desk staff came in at which time all the staff adjourned to the staff kitchen for breakfast and a chat (obviously the urgency had gone from their cleanup duties).
I also made the mistake of looking under the bed in the daylight. The hotel looked nice and new but a vacuum cleaner had not ventured under the bed since the furniture was delivered. The dust and dirt under the bed was appalling ~ you could grow crops in it if you were so inclined! Equally (or perhaps more) scary was the built up grim under the soap container. In an obvious cost cutting measure the hotel had gone away from guest soaps, shampoo bottles etc to the bulk dispenses attached to the wall. Trouble is, no one had bothered to check the dispenser was full and it ran out after the first squeeze. My wife pulled the tube off the wall to try and aid gravity only to fine a cesspool of collect dirt and grim built up in the dispenser head. The sewers of medieval London were more hygienic.
It became obvious why the hotel was such a basket-case. I tried on several occasions to talk to the manager but she was either not at work, running late for work or off on a break. (What a great job ~ I hope she wasn’t being paid!)
Recommendation: Avoid this hotel like the plague because that is the closest description I have for it!

We have just returned from a week at Scandic Sydhavnen. The hotel gave me a terrible experience I have ever had. Firstly, Hygiene Problem. Just when we got to the room we found the floor was spread over with dirt and hairs and the used (recycle??) peel-off guest welcome card put on the pillow. Bedsheet was re-used everyday until we requested for a new one in one morning at the reception. Secondly, Room Arrangement. We booked a standard room for two adults and turn out having a single room with everything just for one set (also the shower gel had aleady been used up without having refilled) and eventually we were arranged for another single room but the guest welcome card was still used by someone else and also with the dirty floor. Thirdly, Poor Room Equips. We did email an enquiry about the shower stuffs like if a standard room having a shower tray or bath, they replied both shower tray and bath would be in a standard room and we indeed got a standard room with only a shower tray (we really don't care a tray or a bath but they should never cheated us or they can put words on email that we may have been arranged for just a shower tray somehow). Finally, basic attitude to a guest. We woke up a bit late in a morning and was just a couple of mins before the breakfast section finish when we got to the hotel cafe, we rushed to the breakfast table and started to get some food at the same time a guy was also rushing to take everything back to the kitchen just like we were having a war game with the staff there, poor us made every attempt to get some hams and the like but at the same time that guy was also trying his hard to throw the hams away to his food-collecting trolley. Last but not least, since we noticed there was no toothpaste and toothbrush in the toilet so we asked for a set, a guy turned up, handed us the stuffs then walked away without a word. At the day we checked out the cashier asked us for DKK75 and stated we were charged for buying a toothpaste and two toothbrushes. We were just shocked and we disagreed to pay for that since we were not informed those stuffs would be charged in the room bill at last and that means the hotel could charge us as much as they want without letting people know in advance. How ridiculous is such a Hilton owned hotel running its business in this way and still surviving in such a well-developed, friendly, nice captial ??
Some tips for someone plan to stay there:1) Bring what you need for a camping 2) Bring along your housemaid or try to hire one to do the cleaning 3) Make sure that you know how much you'll be charged whenever you want sth provided by the hotel. Good Luck!!

we got here by chance after having litterally "fled" from one of the the cab inns down town and boy! were we happy with this address. We stayed 3 nights and the kids (2 and 6 yrs) loved it.

this hotel is just out of town, but greatly situated at just about 5 minutes walking distance from the train station. the trains run frequently and offer very good connections to all parts of town. so no trouble with car park both security wise and money wise. parking at the hotel is free and there is plenty of room.

the hotel itself is very welcoming (staff and architecture) and we found that for a fair price it offered very good and spacy rooms with good beds and a clean and airy bathroom). we got 2 connecting rooms so the kids and us had our own space. we were charged 830DKR for the first room and 400DKR for the second. and that was breakfast buffet included. OK, the cab inn was 765 DKR for the four of us (breakfast excluded) but honestly, 765DKR is a very very very ! high price for what you get at the cab inn.

breakfast was lovely at the Scandic Sydhavnen and very much a positive during our stay. apart from offering almost everything you might want for breakfast the breakfast area has a play corner for the kids - right behind the pancake bar at kids hight. It is close enough to be able to keep an eye and secluded enough to offer some privacy for the kids while not disturbing the other guests. this corner was very wel done.

so, overall a great and relaxing base to discover copenhagen from offering all facilities and good service. definately worth a look at when searching for a place to stay.
