Owner description: This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

“Two ways to view this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Many people are disgusted by this place and many people love it. I happen to be one of the positive people who think this place is an interesting society. You can't take pictures here so just let go of the electronics and enjoy. No one is pushing you to buy anything or do anything that you don't want to. So just go find a beer/soda sit in the park and enjoy the atmosphere.

“Sleazy dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

Apparently setup as some kind of alternative autonomous society, blah blah blah….. walking round this place left me wanting a shower. Just seems to be a rundown slum of a place where almost everyone is either smoking or selling dope or other drug paraphernalia. I was genuinely looking forward to finding a place where “alternative” people were pursuing artisan trades, but found this place very disappointing. Still, always worth a visit, if you don’t go to these places you can’t comment.

“Interesting area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

This was probably the most interesting this i saw during my visit to Copenhagen. The moment you walk in the neighbourhood you can sense that this place is different. Then you see all the graffiti that warn you not to take any photos and it sinks it. Its called the green light district for a reason. You will see all sorts of people from all walks of life sharing a joint and tourists trying to score some. The houses look they were built by the lost boys from peter pan. Everything is chilled and the atmosphere very relaxed. Even if this isn't your kind of scene you should definitely experience it.

“A unique place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014 via mobile

We had read, and heard a lot about Christiania so had some good background knowledge before we visited. It was a great experience however the atmosphere didn't feel as relaxed and free spirited as i thought it would have done. 'Pusher Street' felt quite intimidating, with loud rave music being played, I think I was hoping for it to be more Reggae than rave! Having said all that, it is a place i'll never forget and would recommend a visit, but not with children. If you do go, make sure you do not take any photo's and never run!

“Very laid-back, alternative atmosphere, great for people watching”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

We went during the Christiania christmas market since it was listed in the newspaper as the #1 thing to check out that weekend. It's definitely worth seeing if you're there at that time of year. There are lots of arts and crafts for sale, and you can also purchase some tasty Danish Gløgg (mulled wine) and Aebleskivers (apple cakes). Get there early to avoid the crowds.

We've also been for a walk through the neighbourhood in the summertime. Don't expect much. It's not really an "attraction" so much as it is a cool, alternative neighbourhood to take a walk in and people watch. Some people will find it to be highly grungy, but residents are friendly and I've never once felt intimidated there. It's a cool, artistic environment to check out if you're open-minded and not easily intimidated by a non-traditional environment with a strong smell of cannabis.
