Owner description: This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

“Peaceful, unthreatening, anachronistic.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

definitely worth a visit, especially if you're too young to remember the 60's. A full on hippie commune including market, bars and the open sale and consumption of hash! Bit of a party atmosphere and the whole experience is unusual but pleasant.

“Unique Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Like travelling through the 70's and felt almost like a trance. The locals welcome everyone. There are numerous shops with locally made crafts like socks, hats, mitts and small leather goods - nice to purchase as souvenirs. You can also buy food and drinks. There is some entertainment. The most interesting part to walk through (no photos allowed) is the "green zone". This is wear you can buy some "Stuff". We enjoyed our visit but found it a bit unusual to see all of this stuff out in the open and very welcome to all who were there. A lot of young people, and lots of tourists.

“Christiania...Hippy Heaven!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

If you have hippy-like tendencies and ever have the chance to visit Denmark, you will love Christiania! Also known as Freetown, this little part of Copenhagen offers many interesting experiences that you can't find anywhere else in the modern world. Tree huggers and veggie lovers welcome! Lol :-)

“Not what I expected”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013 via mobile

Reading all the reviews here, i expected it to be a cheerful place, with happy and relaxed people, nice little gardens, flowers, colorful houses and stands with cute things: something very hippie. Instead, it just really saddened me. It looks abandoned and very hollow, almost spooky. It was extremely dirty, it smelled horrible and there were broken bottles and litter everywhere. I didn't feel in danger at all, lots of people are concerned about the fact that there are drugs etc but it is literally nothing to be afraid of. You can see people lighting up joints and around green light district there is smell of weed, but if tou have ever been in a college party you've already seen it all.
If you really want to see it, it's not very big so it won't take a lot of your time, but there is literally nothing special about it at all. I felt sad and disappointed, and I wouldn't visit ever again.

“Amazing place - but go at the right time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

I took a walk around Christiania on a Sunday afternoon and it was amazing. They had a small market which sold cool clothes and there was an all day/night concert going on. The sun was shining, good music was playing and there were loads of people drinking, smoking and having fun. However, when I returned a couple of days later (on a Tuesday morning) it was a tad depressing. There wasn't anything going on apart from dodgy looking people selling drugs. I think a lot of the bad reviews about Christania have been from people who have been when there was nothing happening. I would definitely recommend going to see it but go when there is some sort of event going on (which would most likely be on a weekend).
