“Famous Danish Sculptor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

While Thorvaldsen mostly worked in Rome and his pieces are all over Europe this museum next to the Christianborg Palace is the pride of Denmark. If you enjoy classical sculpture this is a unique experience.

“Move over, Rodin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

A prolific Danish sculptor, Thorvaldsen impresses one not only with the scope of his sculptures, but the quantity. An excellent museum that provides (free) an accompanying, very informative narrative for major works. This is in addition to the info boards located in each room as well as the handouts provided. Go on a Wednesday and it's free. Best of all, photos (non-flash) are allowed, as they seem to be in most Danish museums...very refreshing.

“Neo-classical art in a building designed specifically to house it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

The building and the pieces I saw were breath-taking. Thorvaldsen is a master of neo-classical art. I love his work, so I was driven from the museum by a daring modern exhibit installed along side the classical statures. It was an unwise choice of venues for this type of cultural experiment since people come specifically to experience this beautiful museum. I hope the officials in charge will think twice before trying it again. I was consoled by visiting the Church of Our Lady a few blocks down where Thorvalden's Christus and 12 Apostles are housed. The staff are outstanding - got questions? Just ask. They love their museum!

Thank you – we very much appreciate your feedback.

As to our current exhibition “The Decembrists visit Thorvaldsen” you are quite right that the works of the artist group The Decembrists may seem rather overwhelming. However, we can assure that all members of the group have done their very best in trying to establish a dialogue with the works of Thorvaldsen. And as a museum we do feel that we have a responsibility to do our very best to maintain the importance of the collections and the museum for a modern day point of view – one way to do this is to invite modern artists to give their view on Thorvaldsen.

It is great to hear that you found Thorvaldsen’s works breathtaking and our colleagues helpful as well! We hope to see you again some time! :-)

“Interesting sculpture museum, off the beaten path”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Beautiful building housing wonderful Thorvaldsen sculptures. When we visited in July, there was also an interesting art exhibit which mixed modern art with the existing sculptures in really unique ways. Worth a visit! Included in the Copenhagen Card, too.

“Lovely museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

I took advantage of the free admittance during the Copenhagen cooking festival. I had no prior knowledge of Thorvaldsen himself but was fortunate enough to catch a guided tour. The tour guide was very good and it was interesting to learn more about Thorvaldsen and the art scene in his time.
I really liked the museum and the painted ceilings are beautiful! The temporary installations made for a nice contrast. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful as well!
