Owner description: The Hirschsprung Collection is beautifully situated in the green parklands of the Ostre Anlaeg on the old ramparts of Copenhagen. The museum houses Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung's collection of Danish art and first opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1911. The museum was designed by the architect H.B. Storck, while the original interior and display was designed by the art historian Emil Hannover, who also became the museum's first Director. Henrich Hirschsprung donated his collection of works from the 19th century to the Danish state in 1902. The collection includes masterpieces by the Danish Golden age painters such as Eckersberg, Lundbye and Kobke as well as artists from the modern period such as the famous Danish painters P.S. Kroyer and Vilhelm Hammershoi.

“A jewel of a museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

The Hirschsprung Collection features several room in a town house filled with beautiful examples of Danish art from the mid-19th to early 20th century. Stunning realistic and movingly impressionistic examples of portraits, interiors, landscapes - the whole range of those who made this storehouse of Danish paintings so remarkably rich. Unique and memorable.

“Danish Golden Age”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

This museum is a little gem located very close to the Danish National Museum (in the same grounds). It is not a large museum so you can visit it and enjoy it in around two hours, if you have three or more even better. The ticket costs 10E but the audio guide is included, and I recommend it. It is a fantastic opportunity to get to know Danish artists such as Kobke, Brendz and Kroyer and through the art get to know life in Denmark better. My personal favorite was Michael Ancher's portrait of his wife Anna.

“Small but select”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Not many rooms, so easy to manage. A lot of the Danish paintings are small and stacked on top of each other in the rooms, so there is visual overload. The large centre room is refreshing; it displays art of a 19th-centrury group called the Skagen School, who painted on the northernmost tip of Denmark. The showpiece is "Summer Evening on the Beach"—a huge painting of a blue-tinged moon-lit scene.
The gallery is good to visit as a halfway break from the National Gallery because it is just behind it.

“Big house changed into a museum, not a great value for money...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

Small interesting museum. It's worthy if you have the museum pass and you can enter for free. Nothing really special to see, some fine works (none of them masterpieces) from Dutch painters. Behind the National gallery and close to gardens and Rosenborg Castle (both nicer to see).

Thank you for reviewing our museum - we are grateful for all feedback! We have a few factual corrections to make to your review: The Hirschsprung Collection is not built as a private home but was made to look like the home of collection founder Heinrich Hirschsprung, with artist's furniture and a salon hanging of the paintings. The museum represents only Danish art from the 19th century, and not Dutch.

We hope to see yo again in our museum!

“Beautiful gallery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

A gallery dedicated to Danish painting, particularly the 19th century and the Skagen school. Very quiet when I visited so I usually had beautiful paintings all to myself! Get a real sense of the identity of Danish art of that era. Pleasant visit.
