“Perfect hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

We adored this hotel from the moment we walked in the door. It's based on organics and sustainability and really walks the talk. Everything about it is peaceful and relaxing and our room was lovely. The breakfasts are out of this world - the organic voghurt and loose teas are not to be missed. Astonishingly, this is all within 2 blocks of the railway station. The spa was well worth the charge and the outdoor courtyard would be great in summer.

Stayed here for 10 days, initially with my wife for vacation and then for a professional meeting. Relatively good value for this city. Very clean. Pleasant committment to ecologically friendly and sustainable resources. Excellent organic breakfast. Located near the central rail station which is convenient but not so charming. Next to Tivloli but Tivoli closed this time of year. Staff friendly and helpful.

+ Location next to train station, close to tivoli
+ lots of bars and restaurants + butcher's market nearby
+ liked the design
+ good size bathroom in otherwise small room
+ excellent breakfast
+ small balcony
+ staff
+ clean rooms
+ got an good offer
- small room (single room)
- TV small + weirdly installed

Now that I re-think - nothing was really disappointing... would definately recommend!

We booked a Junior Suite for 3 days.
The hotel is a 3 minute walk from the central station, the room was nice and clean and might I say, they have the best breakfast ever! It's 90% organic:)
The atmosphere is very laidback, guests hang out by the bar in lobby at nightime, the staff is friendly and the drinks are strong ;)

This is an old building and not very isolated..
You can hear when people talk in the other room, squeeking sounds and so on.
We had some trouble sleeping at night because of the police sirens in the street.

Besides that, we were very happy with our stay :)

Room Tip: I have read other reviews, where people complained about the size of the rooms. Go for the Junior S...

The rooms are rather small, especially the bathroom but the design is very nice with very fine bio- linen and -towels. Breakfast is not cheap but more than worth the money: all fresh and all organic. You just have to taste this every morning !!!
The young people at the front desk could be a little bit more helpfull. They don't explain opening hours of the breakfast, free tea all day, ...
Watch out for the extra charge when you pay with creditcard.

Location, location, location. Two blocks from the Central Station which connects you to the Metro & S trains. So very convenient. Restaurants, convenience stores, bakeries around. Quiet block at night and safe. About 5 minutes walk to the main attractions i.e. Stroget, Tivoli and also about 5 minutes walk to the non touristy area(which we prefer). Rooms are clean & nice though small in size. Bed is small too even though it's for 2 people- Scandinavian standard size beds. But got adjusted to it after a couple of nights. Hotel serves organic food & gives out free delicious locally grown organic apples. Hotel is also eco-conscious(uses sustainable products for their toiletries, decors, etc). Staff is friendly and accommodating. Stayed here for 4 days initially & we were going to stay at another hotel in Copenhagen after coming from Stockholm but decided to cancel the other hotel & just stayed at Axel again. Room rate at Axel was higher but we'd pay $50 extra for convenience.

Having read all of the reviews about the Axel before leaving, my wife and I decided to give it a shot for our first stay in Copenhagen and we were very pleased with our experience there. We were coming into town on the train and loved how close the hotel was to the Central Station (about 2 blocks, not bad even with luggage). The front desk couldn't have been friendlier, and always did everything they could to accomodate our requests.

The room itself was very interesting, as described elsewhere, is a a pseudo-Balinese style. What really stands out is how far the hotel is going towards being eco-friendly. Beyond basics such as motion-sensing lighting in the hallways and stairwell, almost everything in the hotel room is made from recycled or reclaimed materials. Some of the things are more expected (recycled paper in the toilet paper), but even I was surprised by the bath towels made from recycled cloth and clothing. They worked just fine though, and went right along with the Axel's custom line of bathroom products (shampoo, soap, conditioner, etc). We're not people who are super eco-warriors, but even we felt good about how far this hotel goes to reduce its footprint.

Overall, everything about the hotel was great. There are several sex shops within an immediate block or two of the hotel, so be careful if you are travelling with impressionable children, especially after dark, but we never felt unsafe there.

I would most definitely stay at the Axel if we are able to get back to Copenhagen and you should too.
