“Expensive due to weak dollar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

This was a very nice hotel and I am giving it less than full marks just because it was so expensive due to the strength of Danish currency compared to the current weak dollar. It made it seem as though we didn't get as much as we paid for. But I think all hotels in Copenhagen are similarly super-expensive right now.

My husband, daughter, and I stayed here two nights (before and after a cruise) so saw 4 different rooms in total. The rooms were a good size when compared to other European hotels (though not as large as normal American ones). The first night we had standard single and standard double rooms. They were smallish (the single was smaller than the double) but nicely decorated, clean and quiet. The second night we had superior single and double rooms. These were, as far as I could tell, identical to the standard rooms but had modern bump-outs at the windows (called "bay windows" on the website) and so had a few additional square feet and more light. They were slightly more pleasant but both were adequate. The single rooms seem to in different parts of the hotel than the double rooms - in odd corners or high floors. One of them had a tiny balcony instead of a bay window.

The hotel is in an italic T shape. The top bar of the T faces the street and harbor and has what should be nice views but unfortunately right now is a view of construction on the street outside. This is where the suites and larger rooms are located. Unfortunately, from other reviews, it sounds as though there is street noise in these rooms. The stem of the T extends away from the harbor and the north side of it has an alley beside it and another building close by. I didn't see what the south side of the stem faced. All our rooms were on the north side by the alley. We did not have any problems with noise either night.

The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The hotel breakfast was excellent the one day that we were able to have it. Alas, the breakfast room did not open early enough for business on the day we were flying home so even though breakfast was included in our room rate we did not get to have it. However, they gave us some coffee and pastries to take with us so we didn't starve.

The location is good. On our arrival in Copenhagen, we took the metro from the airport to the Kongens Nytorv station and walked to the hotel. It was a reasonable thing to do though if I had to do it again I might take a cab. We had a lot of difficulty figuring out how to buy tickets. It wasn't set up for foreigners with no knowledge of Danish. We were eventually directed to the ticket office because we couldn't make our credit cards work in the ticket machines. We ate most of our meals at Nyhavn which is only a few blocks away. There is a lot to see within walking distance of the hotel.

Room Tip: Our standard and superior rooms on the north side at the back (the stem of the T) were quiet. Execut...

We stayed here in September 2011. While the location was great, the hotel appears to be quite poorly managed, particularly compared with other hotels we stayed in Sweden and Finland. Our room was on the top floor, and very small - more suited to a single person. There was no air conditioning, and the room got very warm during the day. it did have a small deck which was nice, but there was a problem with noise from an adjoining building if you left the french doors open at night. It also smelt damp (as did other parts of the hotel), and after rain developed such a pong that we asked for another room. This was larger and more comfortable - but again developed a damp smell after using the shower. Only one of the lifts was working, and it could take an age to get up and down to your room, even during non-busy periods. The breakfast was average at best, and the bar was very poor in terms of choice of drinks (and no soda was available while we were there). Wifi was available, but only in the lobby (which did have nice leather sofas). Overall we felt that the hotel was over rated and we would not stay there again.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are better quality.

We stayed at the Copenhagen Strand prior to our Baltic cruise. The location was excellent, but the rooms are tiny and do not have air conditioning. The breakfast was average. The staff in the reception, restaurant and housekeeping were very nice. One of the lifts was out of order, which meant quite long waits. Using one lift is becoming common in many hotels, yet you never see anybody actually repairing the so called broken lift.
I don't think we would return to this hotel, if there is better available in the same location.

My wife and I stayed at the Copenhagen Strand in July 2011. Copenhagen was hit by torrential downpours and flooding the day before we arrived and the bottom floor of the hotel had been flooded along with many of the other buisness and homes in the area. However the staff could not of been more accomodating and helpful and worked around the mess to make sure that the guests were taken care of very well. The staff is very polite and friendly and will answer any and all questions with alot of patience. The hotel is located just a short 2 minute walk from Nyhaven and 10 minutes from other attractions, i.e Tivoli, Christhaven, etc.. Copenhagen is a great city with so much to see and experience. Having a nice, safe, clean, and centrally located hotel to start and begin each day was very appreciated. We would stay again.

One of the first things I noticed when we checked in was the 4-star Trip Advisor rating certificate hanging behind the front desk. Good news, right? Nope.

1. One of the two lifts was out of order for our entire stay (6 days). We spent a lot of time on the stairs or waiting around for the single, tiny, hard-working but ultimately inefficient remaining elevator.

2. The trouser press doesn't get hot enough to actually press trousers.

3. The shower was one of those weird 1/2 glassed in varieties you see around Europe, but this one was particularly bad. No matter how we showered (hand-held or by hanging the shower on the hook) the bathroom floor was soaked when we got out.

4. Breakfast - get there early, And by early, I mean within about a half an hour of when they set it up. A later arrival (and by later, I mean anything later than 1.5 hours before they close) means an empty juice dispenser, picked over platters of bread, meats and fruit, empty chafing dishes of burnt-on eggs and sad potatoes and a find-you-own-coffee system that obliges you to wander around the room looking for a vacuum pitcher of coffee that isn't empty or nearly so. Things barely get replenished, and no one seems to care. Horrible service. And apparently this is such a longstanding problem that they've posted a "come to breakfast early" flyer in the elevator. How about fixing the problem, rather than asking your guests to accommodate your inability to handle a simple buffet meal service? Sheesh.

5. The closest ATM is a 15 minute walk away, and if you don't have a PIN/chip card, you're gonna need an ATM pretty frequently.

6. There are many places to eat nearby that are lovely - the hotel is very near the Nyhavn area, which is filled with terrific places, and closer by there's Sahil (very good Indian restaurant) and Fuego (WOW - exceptional, but pricey) and a couple of others. But if you want a quick, cheap takeout, or a less expensive sit-down restaurant, especially in the evening, get ready for a hike. Copenhagen is a VERY expensive town, so the availability of a sandwich or a cup of coffee anywhere near the hotel would be nice. The few that are around aren't open in the evening.

7. I'm generally not a fan of hotel restaurants overall, but after a long day walking around town, sometimes you want a quiet night in. Not possible at the Strand; they don't have a restaurant. They do have a bar, but it's in the entrance area (the "bar" is actually the front desk) so there's no quiet place to chill before heading to bed.

8. The pillows were the thinnest I have ever encountered, anywhere.

9. The windows in the room are huge, but only a tiny section, about 1/8th of the total size, opens. There's no ventilation at all, so it's really stuffy and warm.

Good points: The front desk staff was very nice, and the housekeepers were friendly. Overall, it's very clean. I didn't experience any of the problems with noise that others have mentioned, but we were on the back side of the hotel. There is a ton of construction going on across the street, so if you do stay here, perhaps ask for a room at the back. Wifi is free - wireless in the lobby and wired in the rooms. The beds are very comfortable other than the paper-thin pillows.

The Strand isn't a terrible choice, but I won't be back. I can forgive most of the above, but the sloppy breakfast service and the ridiculous elevator situation are deal-breakers for me; they're both easy fixes and no one seems to care enough to get it done. Proceed with caution.

This is a converted warehouse that has been modernized. The rooms are very mall, but adequate. What you are really paying for is the easy location. Also book early as gets expensive as fills up.
