“Good Marriott on Canal near city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2012

We stayed 3 nights here and really enjoyed the location. It was right on the canal within walking distance to Tivoli or the main train station. You could also use the bus that ran right in front of the hotel. There was a nice, new mall to the left as you exited the front door which had a good food court and a great selection of places to eat or shop. We found the Copenhagen Card beneficial from the moment we arrived at the airport and throughout our stay. Copenhagen is really nice, clean and enjoyable, but keep your eyes open for bikes. I think they must have a tenth of all the bicycles in the World ;)

I booked a room with a view on the Canal and - when checking in - took an upgrade to an Executive Room. I ended up in a high floor with a scenic view on the Canal and Copenhagen (not the nicest one unfortunately).
The girl when I checked in was very nice and gave us a lot of usefull advises and explanations and really took care of us (brought us to the Executive lounge with again some explanations).
The lobby, common areas & elevators were clean and modern.
The room was quite large, clean, furnitures & design were modern (all in good state ... which might sound normal but which is not that usual - even in 4 stars hotels) and the bedding was good. Though the bathroom was a bit small it was very clean, functional and modern. It had a shower (tiny) as well as a tube. Only minus were the plumbing (tired, calcareous, weak water pressure) and the almost broken soap dish in the shower (never understood how these hotels can tolerate this ... should be so easy to have the cleaning lady informing the technical staff each time she sees such malfunction ... anyway).
Breakfast was ok and rather good (was expensive if bought separately but with the Executive package it made it more affordable).
Location is slightly - very slightly - outside the center (many things are at walking distance in Copenhagen anyway)
As a summary, we had a nice time in this hotel and I can recommend it without any issue

The hotel is situated just 15 minutes walking distance from the Central station on Bernstoffsgade ( the name of the street ).Exiting from the station turn right. If you take a taxi, prepare for a danish taxi rip -off, you will be taken around the blocks for a 15 minute drive, and be charged between 65 Kroner - 85 Kroner, depending on the driver!!!! However, walking to the Marriot Hotel is a straight line, 15 minute walk. No one told us!!!!.

The hotel is spotlessly clean, in fact it shines. How they accomplish this, is incredible. Wipe your finger anywhere, your finger stays pristine clean. The hotel is very modern, and luxuriously appointed. The receptionists are intelligent, speak various languages, and sharp uniform dressers that would pass a seargent majors inspection on a parade ground. They are most wecoming.Always a smile on their faces.

There are four elevators to whisk you to your rooms. Arrive at your floor level, a magnificant open area, luxury carpets, wallpapered and mirrored, with exceptional good lighting. Wide solid polished wood doors to the bedrooms.

Open the bedroom door with the smart card, and you cannot not be impressed as to the size of the room, it is large. Again superbly apponted, and top quality linens and pillows, armchairs, desk and latest TV set. The bathroom is inviting, clean, shiny , large and luxuriously appointed, with everything provided.

The bed is exceptionally comfortable, not a creaky springy sagging old stuffy mattress, but a quality firm luxurious matress. A pleasure to sleep and rest on.

If you read my other write ups of hotels, I do not mince my words, I say how it is!

Now for the coffee / side restauarnt in the front lobby.Very well organised, attentive staff, clean, and highly attentive service, with quality food and refreshments brought hot to your table, not luke warm.

The main restaurant, called midtown, is very expensive, overpriced, and small portions. The waiters are shnmoozy and false, but the manager excellent and highly professional, like an officer with a rag tag army. The chefs are brilliant.

Breakfast is amazing, better than any other Marriot in Europe, a selection of food that is outstanding and fresh produce, never running out, but the waitresses are lazy, and cannot give a damm, what a pity.

The hotel is within walking distance of the majority of the shopping areas and museums. Signposts are non existent for museum locations, guide books with wrong information, and turning up when eventually found, most are closed at rediculous times.

I am at this hotel twice a year to conduct business in the area. The rooms are spacious, the breakfast is plentiful and very tasty. Staff is helpful and courteous, the internet works well. When I was there in December, there was some construction work being done (including the executive lounge area). The hotel did a great job of ensuring the work did not disrupt work or sleep.

I ate at the bar one afternoon, the service and selection was good. I ate in the restaurant one evening and had one of the best servings of salmon I have ever tasted. Service was way above average.

My only complaints are the lines at check in and check out. Hotel is pricey...but in a good location. I am very sad to learn the hotel is no longer on my company's preferred list, therefore I can no longer book this gem. I am sure this is cost related.

Charged extra for spoons!

Do not stay at this hotel. Our stay here was a very disturbing experience. Everything in this hotel is geared towards taking money from you. Absolutely everything. Its like a series of traps waiting to catch you out Not just breakfast being extra, though you might think you would get it paying $413 per night (it's $58 extra!) but why charge for Internet? Many of the cafes a short walk away give Internet for free, so why should we have to pay $13 per hour? When you turn on the TV, the first option that presents is to purchase a special offer package for films and TV to watch during your stay. $31. Why can't this be provided free? In fact, TV can. If you switch to the TV channel TV comes through without any charge. The pay option ought not to be the default - but of course what they hope is that your business is paying for this or that you don't care about your money and will just click on accept. Next, the bar in the room takes around 20 seconds, according to the staff at reception, to charge your bill once you take any item from it. Don't even think about taking it out for a look and then putting it back, as it will be on your bill before you know it.
Finding ourselves wanting fresh milk with the tea made from tea bags provided in the room, a small pot of fresh milk was brought up and guess what, $4.50 was charged. Not even enough milk for a cup of tea is available free from this place! But this was not the pièce de résistance. Having bought two pieces of sports cake from La Glace, a famous patisserie, and taken them back to the room we found ourselves in need of two spoons with which to eat said cake. Guess what? $7 would be the charge for the use of teaspoons. This is disgusting. Really, how can you charge for spoons?! I cannot imagine what the response of the management of the Marriott would be to this comment, something along the lines of keeping prices low and charging for services such as these in order to keep prices to a minimum, but this is not a cheap Hotel- $413 per night without breakfast is hardly scraping by.
Nor are the rooms anything to write home about. Extremely basic and you have to ask for bathrobes because they are only provided 'on demand'. No doubt some environmentally friendly policy dictated this little gem, but to me its more about them saving money. Add the same with towels which they invite you to use more than once rather than get fresh each day. I don't think it's about the environment at all, its just cheaper for them, ultimately making more money for Marriott. Our whole experience staying in the hotel was spoilt by this grasping, scraping desperate attitude of getting more money from you at every turn. You expect to pay for five star treatment, but not to be left with the feeling that somebody has their hand in your pocket constantly trying to screw you for every last dime. I joked with room service that at least the air is free. 'For now.', he said. And I think he meant it. If they could charge for every breath you take, they would.
We will not be staying at the Marriott again, here or anywhere else, and will not be recommending it to business colleagues or friends.

For about 150 euros per night (or even more) you'd expect getting a better experience. The Copenhagen Marriott is just your basic Marriott, nothing more.

Location. The hotel is situated by the canal, which guarantees nice views for those who manage to get a room from that side. The waterfront is good for strolling and seeing the ships passing. Downside of the location is that the center is quite far away. The main railway station and Tivoli (which is a must visit destination, by the way) are by foot 10 minutes away and the main shopping area approximately 20 minutes away. Fortunately Copenhagen is quite small, so you can cover the whole city by foot.

Rooms. Very basic Marriott-style rooms with fitted carpets. The bed was good. We didn't get a view to the canal but to the city so the scenery was quite nondescript.

Service. Of mediocre quality. Especially the service at the bell desk was too slow, it took ages for us to get our luggage to the storage.

Room Tip: Ask for a view to the canal.

It's what expected of a Marriott. Stayed at the club level which was nice. The lounge had the usual offerings. Location was not too great. A bit of a distance to the main city by foot. Excellent view of the river though.
