I have stayed at the Palace many times, even before its Scandic ownership and renovation.
The location of the Palace is quite perfect: at the center of everything in Copenhagen. This does mean that the sounds of city life make their way into some of the rooms. This is either good or bad depending on your outlook. I adore it.
As a frequent guest I often have balcony rooms at the back of the hotel above the Grand theatre. I love to open the windows and listen to the changing sounds of the Copenhagen day. Commuters give way to shopper, who give way to street entertainers and hawkers, then to revellers and to deep city quiet. Add the town hall clock chiming and you have the perfect Copenhagen cityscape backdrop. I never tire of it.
If you want silence may I recommend a hotel somewhat further away from Stroget and Radhuispladsen where life teems less loudly ?
Anyway, back to the hotel: the Palace is a genuine luxury hotel, but Scandic have managed to render it very homely and user-friendly at the same time. The foyer is plush but in no way opulent and intimidating. The little shop sees to that !
Check in staff are always efficient and welcoming, but then again I know most of them.
The elevators are amusing anachronisms that always make me smile, rather than annoying me. For lower floors theres a very grand staircase you can sweep down instead !
The floors can feel somewhat like rabbit warrens, but rooms can be found with some care !. I usually stay in the larger upgraded rooms. Theses are very spacious and beautifully appointed, but again without that feeling of suffocating "poshness".
The beds remain the best I have ever used in fifteen years of worldwide business travel.
Free wifi is areal boon. Rooms with balconies are simply lovely to have great views of the Radhuis or the theatre steps.
The bar has a real genuine personality that makes it popular with even non-residents. Food there can be OK or wonderful depending on the specials. Breakfasts are filling, wholesome and included.
The Palace is not the fanciest hotel I ever stayed at by a long way, but it is one of my very favourite hotels. I think if you "get" the personality of the place and the staff you will love it too.
I booked it for our 24th wedding anniversary next month. Yes its THAT nice !
