The palace is still being remodeled and you have to take this into account, when you visit. All it means is that it is not picture pretty, you need to walk around some fences. Also currently the ruins under the palace were closed.
Palace itself is beautiful, you can walk around by yourself or take a guided tour in English or Danish. It helps you to put things in context and learn a little more about Danish history not just about the palace yourself. The tour takes about an hour, if your guide is very talkative it can be a bit longer.
While you walk through the rooms you feel like you follow the queen, as she uses the palace for some official events. The interiors are large, bright and inviting.
You can photograph inside without a flash (please remember this) for your personal use but you need a permit for commerical use of the photos.
