“OK guesthouse, lacking a warm welcome”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

The apartment is centrally located, our room (no.7) was nicely furnished, but had only one tiny window pane that would open and had another cracked pane - as a result, it was quite warm. The bathroom nearest the front door was the best by far, although it had a huge amount of wasted space - easily could be converted to two full shower rooms and save waiting time. The shared areas were ok - the terrace could be wonderful, but it needs some proper furnishing; the kitchen area was ok with coffee and tea available free through the day.
On arrival, Carsten was in a hurry as he had to attend a meeting, so we thought that was the reason for his slightly cold manner, however, when we saw him around the guesthouse, he would not say "hi" but just turn away, which was a little odd for a guesthouse keeper. On leaving, his only words to me were "we haven't seen you very much" - not the expected "I hope you enjoyed your stay" or "have a safe journey" or "I hope to see you again".
I would stay here again, but don't expect the kind of warm welcome that I have experienced at other gay guesthouses.

To celebrate my birthday I wanted to stay somewhere central which was affordable - Carstens allowed both! Denmark is a fairly expensive country so by saving the costs on accom is ideal. Me and a friend stayed in a twin room which is fairly big with 1 double & 1 single (room 3), Carsten allowed us to arrive earlier than a hotel check in which was ideal.

The only downsides were smoking was allowed in the kitchen, as is in bars/clubs in Denmark but if you are from a country where this has been banned you will really notice this. The other downside was the main bathroom which smelled of damp, however there were 2 other bathrooms which were absolutely fine.

Overall fantastic value, centrally located and a friendly host will provide and a warm and friendly stay in Copenhagen.

Room Tip: If twin room stay in room 3 as its away from the main rooms

My partner decided to join me at the tail-end of my European business trip. We usually prefer to stay in 4-star or 5-star hotels, but we accidentally came across Carsten's online and figured that we'd try something different. While I rated the guesthouse overall as a 3, please know that we had a wonderful experience at Carsten's. The guesthouse is really in a great location, Carsten was very welcoming, and all of the things we feared about a guesthouse weren't problems at all! There were more bathrooms than we expected, so not once did we have an issue getting ready. They were also very clean! The walls were thick enough so that you didn't hear much noise from the hallway when in your room, which was surprising because most of the rooms were full when we were there. The bed was comfortable, our room was a decent size, and we had plenty of closet space. With that said, we did have an issue with noise coming from the avenue below (on a Saturday night), the rooftop was smaller than we hoped (as it's only expanded it the summer months), and while we weren't upset, it was interesting seeing Carsten half-naked the entire time. In the end, we observed that all of the travelers staying at the guesthouse were kind and seemed very pleased. Whether gay or straight, if you're looking for a discounted accommodation, then Carsten's is probably a great option. If you feel you may be disappointed with imperfections here and there related to furniture, broken windows, or potential noise, then I'd recommend staying somewhere else.

Room Tip: The building is U-shaped. Rooms on the outside are warmer because the windows don't open all th...

Normally, I don't enjoy sharing a bathroom, but Copehagen is so expensive that finding a room for 100E a night seemed worth it. And, it was. Carsten and Harrie are wonderful people, and very welcoming. Their place is about 10 minutes from the Copenhagen Central Station and just about everywhere else in Copehagen as well. There are numerous bathrooms and showers, so sharing was never an issue. We had a room on the end (sorry, no room numbers!) but it had a sitting area and a tv and a double bed and vanity - plenty of space to relax and spread out! Don't miss Carsten's breakfast - it's a bargain and more food than you can possibly eat.

We opted to stay at Carsten's apartment which is on the other side of the old town. Simply fantastic and close to everything. My wife suggested this as she isn't big into shared facilities, though I don't have a problem. This location is only 10 mins walk from just about anywhere ...simply fantastic. Carsten is great...such a friendly welcome, and even paid for the taxi to get us from the guesthouse to the apartment. A true gentleman...and makes me want to stay at the guesthouse next time we are over.

Nice place on the top floor of the building with a great location and there is breakfast & drinks available for a separate reasonable price. Friendly doggie was greeting but not disturbing every time i came in. The rooftop terrace was a nice place to hang out with other guests or just to read and sip drinks. The room was very nice though without its own bathroom which was close by.

WLAN for the entire stay was affordable and connection was decent.
