“really friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2011

Arrived fo m the uk by ferry and walked the 10 minutes to the hotel. At reception the girl said "you must be Eric" one of the friendliest hotwl welcomes I'v ever had!
Really clean if a little dated free tea and coffee all day and free wi-fi, all we required for our two night stay. Really comfortable beds with spare pillows and any other requirements available at reception.

Within easy walking distance of the port, Esbjerg museum and main shopping/eating area, yet quiet and peaceful. Secure parking in an enclosed courtyard just a few metres past the hotel. We were made to feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door of this family-run hotel. We don't speak Danish, but as everyone spoke English we got on fine. Reception is staffed 24 hours a day - always someone there when needed but never obtrusive. The room was huge (the size of two rooms in a standard English hotel), with the most comfortable furniture and bed we have ever used. The downstairs lounge is comfortable and homely with free tea/coffee and newspapers available. Breakfast is a real treat with everything from cereal and fruit juice through cheese, sliced meats and wonderful, crispy loaves to fresh fruit. When we left the receptionist pressed a button to summon our taxi (bags much heavier by now!) which arrived as we were chatting. Our only complaint is that the hotel is described in the DFDS literature as 3 star - it should be rated at least 4 star. A real gem in a beautiful city.

Room Tip: 1st floor at the front - room 120

If ever you need to find somewhere that goes that extra mile for someone then this is surely the place. When my son decided to discover travel i must admit I had some awful thoughts about how he'd fare. If you can imagine someone deaf, no speech, unable to read or write and with limited signing ability....who has just decided they are going to Europe on their own..then you can imagine all the horrors of missed trains, ferries, starving to death, mugging etc . etc.

The Hotel Ansgar became his base once he got there (I still don't know how he managed to get there!). After 2 days he went off north by train, another ferry and then returned to the Hotel Ansgar after 6 days. I had explained his situation before he went and they emailed me to tell me he'd returned safely. When he went into reception to try and ask about where he could wash his clothes, someone even took them and returned them ironed.

Needless to say he's stayed there several times now and it's somewhere you find once in a while and definitely want to tell people about it.

My wife and I stayed in the Ansgar for 2 nights over the New Year period. We booked it as part of a package with DFDS Seaways (we sailed from Harwich to Esbjerg).

The hotel is about 10-15 minutes walk from the DFDS Seaways terminal and is located near the pedestrianised shopping district in Esbjerg. We arrived on New Years' Eve. The reception staff were very friendly and told us where the good drinking establishments were located and that there would be a firework display in the nearby square (which also had a temporary ice rink). Our room was of a good size and most importantly, clean. Breakfast was typical Scandinavian - cereals, cheese, ham, boiled eggs. At breakfast, a lady who I presumed was one of the people who ran the hotel asked if it was ok if she could just change our towels, rather than do a full maid service of the room, as the maid had phoned in sick (it was New Years' Day so I put two and two together :)).

Very quiet - I think there was only us and a family of four staying in the hotel at that time. Wouldn't recommend the miniscule lift for anyone even slightly claustrophobic:). Would stay there again.

  • Liked — Quiet. Central location.
  • Disliked — Heating could have done with turning up slightly.
