“So far from what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here at our wedding night and my wife did so the day before. The service was absent. The breakfast was below average and they forgot to clean our room. The location and the view is great, but in terms of people and service the stay was so far from what we expected. I can absolutely not recommend!

The Helnan Marselis Hotel is in a beautiful setting overlooking Aarhus Bay and just 10 minutes drive to either downtown Aarhus or the Moesgard Beach/Museum area. On our first night, since we hadn't specifically asked for a sea view room we were put in a thatched cottage next to the hotel. We asked for a sea view room and were able to move into one the next day. The sea view rooms are superior, not only for the view, but also since they are larger, have lounge chairs for sitting, are more private, and don't require walking outdoors to get to the lobby and restaurant area. Room decor is modern and comfortable. Bathrooms are clean and spacious. The buffet breakfast was pretty good, though staff were a bit lax in cleaning up and refreshing the coffee urns. We were lucky to be in town for the biennial Sculptures by the Sea exhibit. This is a don't miss art event and the hotel is well positioned in the middle of the exhibit seacoast. We could see several of the sculptures from our room. Parking is ample and free for guests. There are multiple nearby restaurants, both at Marselis pier and downtown Aarhus. This is a great place to base yourself for a visit to Aarhus and to take long walks along the seacoast.

Room Tip: Require that the room have a sea view. The thatched cottage rooms are definitely inferior for reaso...

this hotel was just perfect for us jet lagged travelers. I did what reviewers recommended and asked for an ocean view and it was amazing. We booked 3 rooms and they put us next to one another. I had also requested a quiet location and was given a top floor room near the end of the hall and it was very quiet. The hotel was nearly full and the "Sculptures by the Sea" exhibit was nearby so the area was crazy busy. But the service, parking and food was all excellent. (I'd recommend the art exhibit, it was really fun). The free breakfast buffet included everything you could want from traditional Danish food to English bacon and eggs. The windows in the room had blackout curtains to help us with our time change issues. The bed was very comfortable. We walked downtown to see the sights and were tired returning, but it's doable.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view.

This is a wonderful, friendly place to stay if you plan to visit Aarhus, Denmark. They have a seaside grill with easy access to the beach and friendly helpful staff. Breakfast was included and consisted of the typical Danish menu of rustic breads & cheese with thinly sliced ham & other meats as well as American type choices with scrambled eggs and bacon. However if you arrive on a Sunday as I did, be aware that the grill and restaurant are not open after 4 PM. Luckily I had some energy bars packed, as this was my first stop after the long journey from Colorado.

My room had a gorgeous view of the bay and a little balcony, which was directly connected to the room but separate from other rooms. There is a kayak club with kayak rentals right next door and the relatively calm bay waters make for ideal kayaking. There is also a wonderful hiking track in a beautiful forest with easy access from the hotel lobby. And during the whole month of June, this hotel hosts an annual "Sculpture by the Sea" exhibit both in the hotel and along the beach. It's fun to see local art talent, which is mostly various forms of modern art, as is typical in much of Scandinavia.

Make sure you bring plenty of Danish DK currency though. The biggest surprise was how much our US dollars have been devalued since my last trip to Europe 4 years ago. Just one Carlsberg beer cost 55 DK, which translates to just under $11 USD! We have heard that craft beers can be found in Denmark but the only brew we saw was the national brand, Carlsberg, so that price for a production beer was shocking to say the least. From our experiences later on in Billund, the cost was the same, so it was not just pricey at this hotel.

Room Tip: My room was #123 and ideally located. The rooms at that level have great views, as they are high en...

This hotel is placed right by the bay in Århus. The city is really close, not only do I don’t mind the 20 minute walk from the city center, I even enjoy the walk by the harbor and coastline. The forest is the nearest neighbor and perfect for the morning run or afternoon walk. The room was very nice with a great view, but minor things like a broken lock to the bathroom, empty soap dispenser by the sink and the fact that we had to make room for the extra bed our self’s take it down a point. The breakfast is ok, but not great.

Room Tip: For a romantic stay choose a superior room with a private terrace, its worth the extra pay. We did t...

Stayed in a double room, which had great large beds, nice big size room and bathroom. The room had a beautiful view right at se seafront. The staff is very helpfull and kind. The breakfast though, was nothing spectacular, unfortunately a lot of the hot things were quite cold. The hotel is really close to the city center, so taking a cap does not cost that much. All in all a hotel I wouldn't hesitate staying at again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with seaview!

The Egyptian owned Helnan chain calls the hotel "one of Scandinavia´s most attractive hotels". The location overlooking the Kattegat Sea is definitely attractive, but more is needed. The service is friendly, but could do much better: The wi-fi connection was not working - and nobody knew how to fix it, towels were missing in the bathroom, the sauna was closed, many of the public areas, including parts of the restaurant, were freezing cold, others smelled of clorus from the indoor pool. If you want a four or five star hotel, even in Aarhus, there are a few others that are better managed.
