After reading the previous reviews on tripadvisor for the Alkyon when returning from booking my holiday with Going Places earlier in the year I was expecting to be greeted by rude staff, tired bathrooms and I had prepared myself and my travelling partner for the worst. But we were pleasantly surprised. We are two young girls and we were after a city, beach and party break; although initially hard to please we couldn’t have asked for a better destination to experience all three. Once we landed we were greeted by our Thomas Cook rep, who pointed us to our luggage truck and transfer coach. After the three hour flight being a mere ten minutes away from the airport was wonderful, although the bus does drop you off at a cafe five minutes away from the hotel itself (without luggage it’s nice to get your bearings and find your way to the nearest supermarket). At check in we had to wait half an hour for our room but the reception staff were polite and suggested we waited in the lounge area. Our luggage was then bought into the foyer by a member of Dolphin staff, when the room was ready we were called, handed the key and then our bags were taken to our room, with nothing expected in return. Immediately we checked the bathroom and luckily it had been recently updated (no need for the shower flip flops!) it was a beautiful bathroom not only for Greece but would have been accepted as brilliant back home too. Although after discussing with our rep and reading other reviews I believe that bathrooms can be hit and miss. The room itself was not modern but it was comfortable and had all that we needed with sheets on the bed, blankets in the wardrobe as well as two extra pillows, air conditioning, a fridge, plenty of wardrobe space and a terrace with two chairs, a table and a lawn. On our transfer we were given the time for our welcome meeting with our Thomas Cook rep, who was not only helpful at the welcome meeting with our questions about the excursions but throughout our stay. The rooms were cleaned daily (including the weekend although it was less of a service) being the bottom floor we were visited after siesta beds were made every day and were even changed on the Monday, bathroom and bedroom bins were emptied daily, the floor mopped and they even arranged our shoes! Most days we were in when we were visited but the maids always knocked before entering and always gave a friendly hello. The breakfast always included cereal, bread, preserves, yoghurt, fruit, boiled eggs, pastries, bacon/sausage, omelette type egg, juices and coffee. The staff would always greet us, they would constantly fill up what was running low and clean away trays and plates when finished with. The outside breakfast area provided beautiful views of the harbour. The staff were always high spirited and helped with the only problem we had (running out of toilet roll). The pool was always busy and there were very few sun loungers in the shade, but it was clean and the early morning swims we witnessed the sun loungers being cleaned. The location of the Alkyon is another advantage, located between a row of restaurants (Scuna, I would highly recommend), around the corner from the drop off/pick up point for transfers, the bus station (stop 0), ten minutes to the strip where all the bars and nightclubs are, five minutes away from a local supermarket, ten minute walk to the cash and carry, ten minutes to Skiathos main high street and about half an hour walk to the nearest beach Magali Ammos but the bus also passes nearby. Next time I go away I will be sure to take other people’s reviews with a pinch of salt. Not only was our stay safe it was also very pleasant due to the environment as well as the people we met.
