“Be very careful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We stayed here one night when our return flight was cancelled so had little choice of room as the airline made the arrangements, even so the "basic" room was appalling with 1970s bathroom, dirty carpets (in the room and corridors) and beds that were very uncomfortable. The buffet dinner was so bad that it was almost impossible to find anything edible (grey baby corn, potatoes "in the oven" that were soggy and cold) other than the fresh fruit salad. Breakfast was equally poor with most of the cooked food hardly warm and a queue for the only toaster many deep! Perhaps if you pay more the rooms are better but the food will be the same. To be charitable over 200 of us arrived with little notice but even those who were already staying there seemed to have the same food etc. The final insult was being asked to pay 15euro for wifi access per day, we declined! The views were great but just look at them from the road instead of staying here!

I have been researching hotels for a venue for an extended family holiday in Skiathos next year, so when we were taken to the Skiathos Palace due to a flight delay I thought it would be great to see it first hand as I have seen it in a few brochures. A good pool terrace and delightful views but sadly it was an appalling experience. The rooms were disgusting. I am widely travelled but have not seen anything like this for many years. It is like some throwback to the 60's with what seemed to be temporary beds, a dark green chipped bathroom suite, stained carpets, blood-stained sheets, very dated decor. The buffet was also poor quality and poor choice. After the flight delay we just wanted to get to bed so we didn't want to spend time complaining as we were tired, but the full horror of the room hit us in the morning, it will definately not be on my list for our holiday.

The location is excellent.Just wish we could say the same for the hotel. On arrival the check-in was speedy and the porter took our cases up to our room on the second floor,no lift so he struggled a little.we booked a mountain view,no mountain, more like a mound! The furnishings are like something out of lower priced M.F.I.The corridors are very bland and could do with some kind of pictures or decor to make it more apealling to the eye.We were on a B&B basis so we can only comment on Breakfast. This was suffice in selection, just hope they renew the toaster before the new season, you had to put it thru several times before it was "toast".The waiters were efficient but lacked a little warmth & welcome.Smile for God sake.Put that down to end of season maybe.Prices steep for everything.Outside access from the road is very steep and is a problem for the elderly and families with children.
On the plus side the bus service along the coast road is excellent, and regular, this runs up until midnight from Skiathos town and takes approx 15-20 mins.cheap too.View is excellent given the right room. You must book a sea view, nothing else will do.The tavernas in Koukanaries are a 10 min walk away but only 2-3 worth the walk, you are a little isolated here.Dont expect too much for your hard earned cash!

Room Tip: Rooms 501-517,601-617 good views unless you book Exec which are guaranteed.

Great location, there are steps and hills to walk up when you get off the steps but this didn't bother us. The island has a bus which gets you from one side to the other Which is cheap and frequent, there is stop just outside the hotel. The hotel is spotless and the staff are always busy doing something but Are really friendly. The modern rooms all had a great view and are worth paying the extra for (we upgraded when we got there) the bar is fairly expensive but you don't have to carry cash as you can charge things to your room. The views from the rooftop restaurant are sTunning-they overlook koukounaris beech which is a 5/10 min walk away. We used the Hotels own beech as we could charge drinks to our room and didn't have to carry cash. All in all well worth the money and we would come again.

Room Tip: Upgrade to modern rooms well worth it

The hotel is in a lovely setting - sunsets are worth heading to the bar for even if not as a hotel guest. The many steep steps to get anywhere outside the hotel are a problem with a pushchair. Equally, the many stairs within the hotel and there being no lift is a little annoying when lugging a pushchair in heat. Luckily we booked half board as it would have been far too much effort to get anywhere else for an evening meal with our little one. The food was varied, fresh and we loved it. There is a hotel courtesy bus down to the beach in the morning and back in the afternoon but we didn't use it as the timings didn't suit our needs. It also stopped running at 5pm so wouldn't be useful for eating out away from the hotel. There is a strip of bars and restaurants on the bigger beach and between the beach and the hotel but not much else around anyway.
Staff at the hotel are almost without exception very helpful - the reception staff as well as the driver who takes guests into Skiathos Town on the courtesy bus who went out of his way to return a forgotten bag. I say almost without exception as one of the waiters wasn't particularly friendly. The children's play area is great - our under-2 loved playing in the houses and swings there and it was well-designed to cushion toddlers' falls. The swimming pool is lovely but not suited to young children as the shallowest end is 1m. Views from the pool are lovely though. The bar area is also well looked after and very attractive.
The hotel's private beach, Maratha, is great. It's much quieter, the sand is softer and the sunbeds in a single row rather than the busier Koukanaries beach round the bay.
The room was fine - we didn't pay for anything specific/upgrade and it was modern and clean. The TV wasn't tuned in (which didn't bother us anyway) and there was no hairdryer, the mini bar wasn't re-stocked at all during our week stay and cleaning standard was OK. Considering the price, the room facilities probably should be better.
The hotel is great for a relaxing holiday with wonderful views but not the best choice for those with young families.

After booking this hotel and reading some of the reviews online we was fearing the worst, but there is nothing like experiencing this hotel first hand, firstly the views amazing you can't fault the location of this place amazing from any angle, secondly service and staff always on hand and willing to help anyway they can, I'd like to mention a big thanks to Tom who pointed us in the right direction when was looking for something different to do. The food was amazing fresh and plenty of variety not to mention the white view restaurant on the roof which was perfect and no where near as exspensive as mentioned on some of these reviews. The hotel is clean tidy and well organised, the only that let this hotel down for us was the travel agent, most of these reviews talk about the steps and stay away from modern rooms at the end of the day on the hotel website it gives you a clear cut presentation of what is and does not hide from the fact there is room for improvement in some areas of the hotel including the steps leading up to the hotel and the modern rooms and could probaly to do with some evening enternment but your travel agent will not high light these issues to you the hotel would. Overall great place to be will defiantly be heading back for more of the same so palace hotel look out for my email 8/10 just what we wanted COYS

Room Tip: Look on the hotel website before booking

Just got back after 10 nights at the Palace, all the staff I spoke to were all friendly and helpfull especially Tom on reception who is a great source of local information. The hotel is going through a refurbishment program,i understand it will take two more years to complete and the room we were in was a little tired but nevertheless clean and everything worked ok including air con.The room was serviced every day, breakfast choice was good ,something for all tastes, what does annoy me though is people wasting food by taking to much when its buffet style, just go again if you want some more.I was a bit disappointed that at night there is not much at all in Koukounaries and nothing within walking distance, very low key,so its the bus into town for shops and bars etc.The bus service is very good though every 20 mins.from outside hotel. The drive is very steep and the hotel has a lot of steps around the place, something to consider if you have difficulty getting about.Pool area great and free towels every day a nice touch, although we went to the beach a lot of the time, the beach is excellent ,clean and lots of places for drinks food etc,8 euros for 2 beds and umbrella is same every where on Skiathos. We went with Tomson and went on 2 trips,Island hopping and a walk round Skiathos town in the evening, lots of local knowledge, and not to be missed, all in all not a bad holiday, would like to go back when hotel completely refurbed.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the sea
