“Great apartment and really friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2010

Just got back from the Byzantium and have no complaints - great service, good location and nice and clean apartment! Would happily return and recommend to others.

Be warned though, it was very hot when we went and we got a lot of mosquito bites - come prepared with insect repellent!

I have been to Skiathos on numerous occasions, and this has been the best place to stay so far, I travelled with my family which included a three year old, these apartments were great for him gardens for him to play in, great pool, everything in one place, rooms were big enough for two no tripping over each other, balcony at the back of the apartment overlooking the gardens. Costa and his Mama who run the place are very friendly and could not do enough for you, good food supplied throught the day, also there is a supermarket round the corner so you do not have to go to far for supplies. There is also a restaurant near the supermarket which does fantastic food, there is a little play area for kids to use while you are waiting for your drink's, can not wait to go back.

Myself and my partner have just returned from a weeks break at the Byzantium. Typically Greece, the apartments are basic but very clean and there are only 13 so it is nice and small and quiet.. The pool is immaculate as Costas cleans it every day. Small bar run by Costas and Mama - his mum - reasonably priced and very informal, if they are not there help yourself and leave the money or pay him later !!! Sheets changed once in the week and the towels daily but they are old and like cardboard so take your own. You will need a plug in mossie killer and some citronella candles there is a supermarket next door for all your needs and the beach is a ten minute stroll away. You must go to the Vareli restaurant near the bus stop and the quiz nite (Tues( at the christakis opposite Byzantium. Air conditioning is available but is 7 euros a day !!!

after coming back a second time to skiathos. we choose a different resort . only because we always walked over to there beach everyday.

the byzantium is a family run acc the two wks we we're there was a terrific time,
they're are couples who have been going for years back to it. I CAN SEE WHY

the island itself is a treat, but the owners, people that stayed there made it great!

IF YOU LIKE GREECE WELL GIVE THIS A TRY AND THE ISLAND toodle pip for now

I was recommended this resort by the travel agent, when we arrived it looked a little out of the way, once we had a stroll and found where everything was it was the perfect location. The staff/owners where fantastic and didn't let you lift a finger even running to open your umbrella etc. The rooms where very clean and tidy, a little on the small side but why would you want to sit inside all day when the weather was so great, the pool was cleaned every evening. We had a few meals from the pool bar which was always good. All the local restaurants etc where within walking distance and had a good selection at a good price. Great to chill and relax.

We didn't stay at the Byzantium in 2008 because we were unable to get a room. We still went to Skiathos though and stayed at the Marialena (see review). reading the reviews I think that visitors to Skiathos fall into 2 categories. Those that love the simplicity and friendliness of the Greeks (stay at the Byzantium) and those that want the beauty of the island to be supported by modern apartments (stay at the Marialena). I know that we fall into the former category as we'd much rather put up with a fan to cool our room and a few squashed bugs than a morose and unwelcoming owner. Having said all of that I'm sure you can get both somewhere but we're sticking with Kostas at the Byzantium for 2009!

  • Liked — The welcome and how all the guests get on so well.
  • Disliked — People that expect Greece to be Spain

I didn't actually stay at Byzantium but another little place further up the road with use of Byzantium pool - i went on my own for a relaxing holiday in 2005 - i paid 200 for the whole package for 2 weeks. The proprietor of Byzantium in my opinion is first class and looked after myself and others very well in deed. Nothing was too much trouble. the following year i took my partner to Skiathos, he agreed how beautiful the island was so much so we are returning hopefully to Byzantium 2009, we would have gone this year but unfortunately had to visit the mainland for a family wedding. Anyone who was in Skiathos in july 2007 and saw the fires that destroyed so much of the island and the terror it caused for the residents and the 15 hours that the air and land crews took to put the flames out would maybe realise that airconditioning and a few squashed bugs are really not that important. Everyone in Skiathos is very respectful and friendly, therfore most of the holidaymakers at that time stayed to help as much as they could when these fires hit.
Greece in the summer time is hot, the write up does not say it has air conditioning, and mosquitoes and bugs are all part of the package when you visit these islands. Surely they cannot be expected to repaint the apartments each time a visitor has slapped they're flip flops on a bug!! Byzantuim is a lovely family run establishment and you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

  • Liked — Typically Greek and very accomadating
  • Disliked — We had to go home!!!
