“Splendor and Simplicity in Spetses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

Though you can spend 210 euros on a Vilebrequin swimsuit just footsteps from the ferry at Spetses, the island has a rustic tempo and, in May, no tourists. (Even at high season, it is frequented mostly by Greeks.) It feels very much like a “real” place, with family businesses and a community not at all chasing tourist dollars. When we only had a credit card to pay for lunch at the cash-only Paradise Beach cafe, we were told not to worry, “pay tomorrow.”

Also a short walk from the harbor is the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, which is just as beguiling as it is grand. Set on a broad plaza, the hotel looks out over the water from rooms with soaring ceilings and charming little balconies. A massive renovation has left the hotel’s 19th century charm intact, but allowed for all the amenities of a five-star operation. For example there is a perfectly fine elevator, but the grand stairwell is so beautiful and stirring that I preferred to walk, even to go up.

Had there not been a mountain hike, and swims to take just off the plaza and several fabulous fish restaurants staffed by the most good-natured people I can remember meeting, I would have lingered in the hotel’s majestic and somehow also intimate drawing rooms. Or in the library bar. Or on the terrace, where you can have breakfast under the canopies and watch the sun glitter on the water. The last time I felt so civilized, so fin de siècle, was having breakfast at the Villa D’Este. In back, at the spa and the garden pool, the Poseidonion could be in L.A. But its authenticity of another era is what you won’t ever forget. - Walter Owen

I arrived to the hotel on Saturday 24th of May. The sight of the hotel as I got out the sea taxi was promising, As I walked in the hotel the feeling got stronger. The check in at the hotel was superb, the front desk employees that welcomed us were so professional, so friendly and providing to our needs, as they offered us even wet towels to take away the sweat which was a result of a hot day. The cold drink which was also offered, was all that we needed at that point, so refreshing. The room was clean, had all the comforts and the amenities one can ask for. The bathroom was large and gave you the ultimate feeling of luxury. The view to the sea from our balcony, was the bonus gift. At all times the personnel of the hotel was there to help, always with a smile and eager to make us feel comfortable. The building itself is a very fine building, renovated and with a relaxing atmosphere. The breakfast veranda is the best place to have your breakfast with a gorgeous view of the coast across. It is a stay I will always cherish and I do look forward to visit this heaven, soon very soon.Being in the hotel industry myself for 26 years in a managerial position, makes me a very strict judge, but in this case, I believe the hotel and its management are doing a very fine work.

It is incredible to find this type of architecture and such a fine decoration in a small island in Greece but in 1899, a Greek tobacco tycoon coming back from USA decided to build a mansion like the Negresco in Nice for the rich Athenians who used to come to Spetses for hunting.
After the opening in 1914 , the island of his youth became a glamour place where not only hunters wanted to come but their wives and children too, royalties and nobles from other countries because of the spa, the orchestra and the mixed baths at the sea. Now the tradition continues with a pleasant pool, the spa massage, the live piano music at sunset and, after champagne and a nice dinner, an exceptional quality of sleeping with memory form mattress.
After 100 years the restoration of the building and the rooms are faithful to Belle Époque design, and the presentation of the breakfast buffet is “vintage” so that the delicious gastronomic creations are even more inviting.
We really enjoyed our Rally in Spetses, our stay at the Poseidonion and , not less important, parking our classic car in the 24 hour super safe surveyed area of this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view front for vibrant and exciting lifestyle vacations but, if you prefer calm, seclud...

We spent 3 nights at Poseidonion and found the service, accommodation and staff, all to be excellent! Every request was met with a big smile and nothing was too much of a trouble!
When we arrived, we were greeted with a cold welcome drink and were shown to our room. The location and of course the view were perfect-- close to the island's main town, where all the shops are, yet far enough for someone who just wants to relax and enjoy some quiet time. Although it was still quite chilly, we decided to visit the nearest beach, which took us about 10 minutes to reach.
Overall we cannot recommend it enough, and will definitely come back!!!

We found a new interesting destination in Greece: Spetses and its historical, renewed, famous Poseidion Grand Hotel. At the end of March there was not too hot, sunshine almost every day, two stormy days. The hotel is very nicely renewed, respecting all its earlier years. Our visit happened at the time season was just beginning. There were no families with children, which surely was valued by the quests, who wished some luxury in their lives. Rooms we saw were reasonably, elegantly furnished. Odd, however, the rooms in the newer building seemed to be more spacious and even finer, but you could not enjoy the feelings of the old main building there, if that was you wanted.
The cars on streets were substituted by motorcycles, but luckily their noise ended at night.
The personnel were kind, helpful and friendly, whatever you needed, mostly professionals, but there were also some trainees, which was to be noticed every now and then. We were rather satisfied with the food (breakfast and dinner), even though the restaurant was a little bit cramped and therefore the dinner buffet was boring with its queuing.
The free Wi-Fi functioned only in lobbies. I’d prefer that in rooms, too. It stopped working on my cell phone after one day.
Getting there is rather troublesome. Firstly, you have flied for nearly 4 hours to Athens, and then you take a bus to Kosta for 4-5 hours via Corinth canal and quite curvy mountain roads up and down, then a fully loaded boat taxi with 27 persons and their luggage. I am sure that if it were easier, I’d consider travelling there again. My age and health does not allow all day sitting for travelling. Most of the difficulties were caused by the lack of information from the travel agents side.
The yards at the pool were beautifully furnished. When ever we were sitting there or at internet, a glass of water was brought to us. It meant that you are noticed, important customer.

Room Tip: If you wish total quietness, choose the room in the newer building.

The hotel is at the best location in Spetses, it welcomes you already asa I you arrive by boat to the Island, it also have a small marina next to it. The hotel is just beautiful and rich of history! We loved everything about it from its architecture to food and staff! Evening time at the hotel restaurants and terrasse is real cool and nice. Swimming pool side's very cosy too. We count on going back again this year hopefully as the hotel is celebrating this year its 100th birthday.

nice room ,high ceilings, good ac, grand terrace-the most unique part of the hotel - but always reserved ,we could rarely get a table during our 6 day stay. Spetses has mainly Greek visitors as it is close to Athens by high speed boats. average restaurants and expensive, "Paradise" is the best beach.
