“Stying together with Schliemann”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Every lover of history must just go there, and you must go this summer! The hotel is more or less like it was decades ago, and staying there is like travelling back in time. After exploring the ruins of Mycenea, it is just the right thing to do. Shower and toilet is not in the room, but across the corridor, just like it was when Agatha Christie, Jean-Paul Sartre and a lot of stars in European history stayed here (some of the names of the most famous guests are marked on the doors to the rooms where they lived), and like it was in my own childhood. Agamemnon, the owner of the hotel, says he is going to renew it, but in a careful way, not to take away the sense of historical flavour. Let's hope he succeeds, and let's hope in the future that there will be enough Europeans, Americans, Asians, etc with a love for history who come to Mycenea and to the hotel of Heinrich Schliemann.

Over the past years my husband and I have stayed at this hotel, and what a lovely time we have always had there. The owner, Agamemnon, is so gracious, and so much fun, we so enjoy this location. Inside the hotel are many pictures of Heindrick Schliemann and the great grand father of Agamemnon. This hotel is filled with history. Another nice feature is that it is so close to the site of King Agamemnon. The room price is so very cheap, and comes with breakfast.. While the rooms are small, the location is grand, so all this makes up for the room size, we definitely recommend Hotel Belle Helene,

Room Tip: If walking upstairs is a problem, ask for a room on the lower level.

There's absolutely nothing fancy about staying here - you must overlook many of the hardships - but of all the places I stayed at in Greece, few were as memorable as this.

One must imagine what it was like when Schliemann came to town to excavate. The Dassis family owned the largest and biggest house in town then - and Schliemann begged them to let him stay there. Now you can stay in the very room he stayed in.

(If you want to get a look, see the Bettany Hughes documentary on Helen of Troy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBUO0Tut8Ds - you will see a scene with her in Schliemann's bedroom.)

George Dassis (4th generation since Schliemann's era) has hosted hundreds of budding archaeologists (university students) in recent times and back in the day, the creme de la creme of celebrities. Today, it's a quiet place, with few amenities, but incredible historical value. I much preferred it to some fancy tourist place in Nafplio - but it's not for everyone. It's rustic these days.

If you get a chance to talk to George (who speaks English fluently), he is a walking encyclopedia of the local archaeological site. He and his wife just had their first baby - a girl named, of course, Helen.

I adored staying here and really appreciated George's hospitality.

PS If you are into Schliemann's story, don't miss the Numismatic Museum in Athens - it's housed in his grand mansion, one of the first Neoclassical homes in Athens, and an architectural marvel.

Room Tip: Ask for Schliemann's room! Bring flipflops for the shower floor.

I know, tourists don't care about a place as La Belle Helene of Menelas, but travellers do or a Nobel literature prize as Girogios Seferis also does(Read it in his poem "In the manner of GS")

I didn't hear about Schliemann House (established 1862; second hotel license all around Greece), La Belle Helene, before to arrive. We were just passing, looking for a room to rent in Mycenae by night when I saw the tittle sing post. What a great chance!

Agamenon Dassis runs the family business. Dassis have been the owners for generations. Great heritage you have, Agamenon!

Agamenon is open-minded and straightforward people. I've been there with my children last 4th of July (2012) after pioneers archeologists as Schliemann or Dörpfeld were went long time ago.

Hotel is impressive couse its heritage, good enough to take a rest in your trip. Hostess are helpful. Clean blankets, air conditioning, free wireless... and clever talks.

It was a pleasure to spend our time there.

This place a definitely a hidden gem if you like history. We stayed here just one night as we explored Mycenae and the hotel was almost as memorable as the site. This is a budget hotel but the facilities are more than adequate: air conditioning, good room lighting, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, etc. The host is a direct descendant of the original owner who worked with Dr. Schliemann and can point to the preceding generations on the wall as he checks you in for the night. There are innumerable notable people (many unexpected) who have stayed here over the years that I will not list as to hopefully not ruin the surprise. This place is 2/3 hotel and 1/3 museum which is more than fine by me.

If you love sterile, luxurious accommodations then this place is not for you. If you enjoy historically significant hotels with a warm and inviting host then stay here. One of the highlights of our trip for sure.

Basic rooms, bathrooms down the hall.
The hotel was empty when we arrived at 10pm or so, we found the place to be freezing cold, the bedroom widows were open, the heating did not work very well, and there were no extra blankets nor anyone at the hotel to ask. The man at the front desk left after he checked us in. We had two room on the 2nd floor and found our stay to be very uncomfortable as could not sleep all night due to the cold. The bathroom was dirty. As another reviewer wrote, for history buffs it may be a big deal, however for a family of 4 with two kids under 10, it was not worth the discomfort.

During our month touring Greece, we, of course, visited Mycenae. We were the only guests in the hotel La Belle Helene (the hotel was officially closed for the off-season) on a very windy and spooky March night. Since we had our pick of rooms, we chose to sleep in Schliemann's upstairs bedroom, where we had dreams of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. A wonderful memory, thanks to our generous host.
