a) The Panorama Hotel:
The Panorama Hotel is a well-appointed, family-run hotel, situated on the outskirts of Petra. In all aspects of its service, standard of accomodation and facilites we were completely satisfied and it provided an ideal base from which, to enjoy the beautiful island of Lesvos.
The hotel's best features are its large, well-maintained swimming pool with excellent sun terrace and ample sun-lounging facilities; distinctly better-than-average rooms, which were unusually spacious, freshly decorated and spotlessly clean; decent snack bar, overlooking the pool....and polite, but friendly service. Just to top this all off, the hotel is situated in beautifully landcaped grounds and has fantastic views across the harbour and village of Petra and out into the Agean Sea.
I scratch my head when I read one or two of the (admittedly minority) critical reviews of the Panorama on this website. I can only imagine that people a) like to pay a budget price, but then expect the Savoy, or b) tend to get all steamed up over relatively trivial details / incidents. All I can say is that we didn't hear one bad word about the hotel itself or the level of service from anybody throughout our fortnight's holiday.......completely the opposite!
b) Petra
Petra is a pleasant, beach-fronted village with the usual array of bars and tavernas, providing a mixture of English, Greek and Italian food. It was, well......OK, but in terms of ambience, it is eclipsed by the charm and harbour-side beauty of Molyvos, situated 2 km aong the coast.
However, Petra ticks most of the boxes, has all the facilities and shops that you need. Best of all it has stunning views of the sun setting out over the blue waters of the Agean Sea. Overall, we felt that it was a good choice of resort.
c) Lesvos
Lesvos is a large, (50 miles across), hilly, surprisingly green and forested island, which benefits from excellent roads. Much of it is fairly under-developed from a 'tourist' aspect.
As usual, most of the travel guides have to be taken with a pinch of salt.....not all of the recommended villages really have that much to offer.
Definitely worth at leat one visit, however, are Molyvos and Scala Sikaminias; both beautiful little fishing harbours with a small number of excellent fish tavernas. Also worth a mention is Skala Kalonis, which fronts onto Kolpos Bay and has excellent fish tavernas. Also, there is the hillside village of Agiassos, with its narrow, cobbled streets and traditional market place, specialising in local arts and crafts.
