Every city has its main Orthodox Church, in Thessaloniki it is -St. Dimitry Church for sure. It is a remarkable piece of architecture but all its beauty is hidden inside.
When you go inside, you hold your breath, suddenly stricken by its magnificent look, golden iconostasis and high arches. Please sit there for a while and feel the holy atmosphere.
It's better to go there with a guide who will tell you story about the Early Christian period in Greece, the legend about Dimitry who was prisoned in the crypt and show you symbols of Christianity on the walls preserved from ancient times ( fish, grape). Don't forget to drink some holy water from the spring inside the church. It has two entrances: main and the one to the back yard, it also has stairs to the crypt.
Crypt is preserved from ancient times with the remains of old brick and old cobblestone road but the church itself is rather new, decorated in present times. Don't forget to buy some icons or souvenirs in the shop especially if you have friends or relatives Dmitry by name.
