We spend many months each year in Greece and we were having a drive around the Island of Lefkas last November and purely by chance, near Hortata (Khortata) near the west of the island, we came across t'Aloni restaurant.
Far too good to be called a mere taverna, and only 15 minutes from the nearest beach and the same time from Vassilki, this professionally run establishment is a delight.
Teo, the owner and restauranteur was a charming and interesting man who was a pleasure to talk to and lacked the usual patronising stance so many 'Taverna' proprietors possess by way of the usual overwhelming show of 'friendship' and apparent delight at one's presence. No Teo was welcoming and genuine and informative and professional.
So many Taverna owners/restauranteurs in Greece are just seasonal food emporiums and just there for the 'season' and the tourist trade. T'aloni obtains a huge credential by being open all the year. The restaurant inside was laid up with linen table cloths, a joy when compared to the usual paper table cloths with the usual map of Lefkas on it. The whole restaurant just screamed class, quality, cleanliness, and professionalism. The best was yet to come.
The wine was first class, recommended by Teo and it was excellent value (bottled) and excellent quality and we like to think we know a little about wine. The food.......well I shall not write a diatribe, suffice to say, ask Teo for what he recommends, we did, and it was fresh and a joy to the taste buds (the salad was the best salad I have had in Greece) and what followed was a lunch we to date consider to be the best we have ever had in Greece. Ecstatic is a word which leaps to mind.
We return to Greece this February and one of our first port of calls will be t'Aloni.
I highly recommend this restaurant. Pound for pound, this place represent great value and great quality.
