We visited Kefalonia and the Asteris apart/hotel between 11/07/06 - 25/07/06. We are seasoned travellers to the Greek islands and have visited Kefalonia previously, however we have not experienced such a high standard of accommodation. We stayed in one of the large 2nd floor apartments, which enjoyed unspoilt views of the sea, Skala, and on clear days Zakynthos. Two large rooms, a well equipped kitchen (only two electric cooking rings could be a problem if you were seriously considering self catering for the duration of your stay), bathroom (with bath and shower) as well as two large balconies. The apartment can accommodate 4, but with just the two of us, we rattled around and the experience was unfamiliar based on previous Greek lodgings! The whole apartment felt new and fresh, the rooms was cleaned daily (fresh towels too!) and linen changed every couple of days. The two large rooms are both fitted with a/c and are a real bonus in the July heat. The Asteris reception is large and modern with good reception service. There is sky tv, a pool table and other games etc for younger children. The bar and restaurant are handy, but would recommend exploring Skala and Poros to enjoy the Greek Cuisine. The pool is of a good standard however this can mean a shortage of sun beds on some days. The accommodation is close to several good unspoilt beaches and you are within driving distance of several excellent beaches including Antisamos (which is a must see). I would disagree with those people claiming that the 40 minute (each way) walk into Skala is OK. I would strongly recommend not to rely on walking as your main form of transport when based at the Asteris. In the heat, i would say this walk is a risk to both healthy and those less so. Sunburn aside, i don't think you could carry enough fluids to replace those lost on this trek! I would say this is more like a 60 minute walk (each way). A hire car is essential, or taxis at 6 euros each way. For example, if you walked to Skala for an evening out, you would be hot, sweaty and dusty upon your arrival, also your return journey will be in complete darkness. Very dangerous! Do not be mislead by some of the other comments although they are valid opinions nonetheless.
Our only criticisms of the Asteris apartment (rm 118) would be that the smart tiled floors were dirty throughout, which meant a constant battle to keep your feet clean. We do own shoes, but bare feet is the order of most days due to the heat! Furthermore, there can be swift and unannounced ant invasions should you drop any food, large or small. You are not provided with a brush and the ants can be a real problem!
Finally, the accommodation is popular with young families as well as couples. Personally, this is something i would prefer as it means there is no sign of the club 18-30 culture, however there are two evenings when the entertainment can be a problem if you like to sit out on your balcony or get an earlyish night. Most studios and apartments are close to the action and the music can go on until well after 1am even though the Asteris claim there is a 12am curfew on such noise. A point well laboured to us on our arrival. Don't take this the wrong way as it is an enjoyable part of most peoples holidays, however the brochures and reviews can mislead you to think this is a quiet accommodation.
Do not let me put you off with the two small criticisms. The Asteris is streets ahead of most accommodation we have experienced. Cleanliness, space and quality are all included and in my opinion the location outside of Skala is an advantage as you can escape the hustle and bustle! If not for our personal tastes, I would have scored this accommodation and its location as excellent. Well done to Costa and Poppy (and the team) who have built and maintain a great place to stay and enjoy Kefalonia.
