I think my review will upset some people as I researched the Hotel before I travelled, but here goes;
It was my first trip to Cephalonia, having travelled extensively throughout the Greek Islands it has long been on my to-do list. Knowing that the island has a permanent residence of around 500 people I was expecting 'Greece'. Unfortunately, it shows. The island is looking tired and frail, still extraordinary natural beauty, but dilapidated infrastructure and services.
We booked through Thomson after narrowing down location etc, through Tripadvisor.
My first moan, complaint was the 2.5hr transfer from the airport to resort. A journey of 35km!
Surely a better service could be provided? It only took 3.5hrs to get there on the plane!!
The hotel.. Fantastic location, that's about it I'm afraid. Yes Yiannas offers great, limited, service, but there are no services to offer. Tumble dryers, kettles, irons? The room had a fridge, but 3 plugs. See if you can find the fourth?
Breakfast... Well, after reading the reviews we thought we've had worse, so how bad could it be??
Well, bad.. Bread, ham(spam), cheese, tomatoes, 1choice of fruit. Something that is labelled coffee, and warm water disguised as tea. Now don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting a full buffet, but prisoners get better than this, and for what Thomson charge for this 'Hotel', I expected more.
If you do go, walk 5 steps left and drink elsewhere, the pool bar was the most expensive in the resort, it's a shame, because there was no real focal point to chat with other guests. It was mostly empty, sadly. It needs an upgrade, the lights, the furniture, it's a shame because it could be the best hotel in the resort.
Like one of the reviews I've read the resort is very good, great places to eat, Sirocco, Apostolis, the Pines, these were the pick for us. The Pines being the only one we visited twice.
Car hire is good fun and we used Greekstones, offering an excellent service and based in Scala.
We enjoyed our stay, as we just relaxed and took it in our stride. It saddened me to write this review as I wanted to be enthused and tell everyone to go there. All I can say is its worth a visit if it's on your list, just not at this hotel.

First time for us in Kefaliona and the beautiful resort of Skala. I emailed ahead to Tara Beach requesting a ground floor room for my parents and they couldn't of been more helpful. Rooms are clean but basic, shower is the best one we have encounted in Greece! Clean towels and linen provided every three days, Air-con was a must even at this time of year. Pool area is kept really clean and tidy, only a couple of children there and were no trouble at all. Sun beds on the beach just across the road were 5 euro for 2 sunbeds and umbrella. Lots of lovely places to eat, although most are located up a steep hill, but once up, there is a wide choice - our favourite was The Old Village and for drinks Veto bar where a large glass of wine and large beer were 2.50 euro each. Tara Beach is an ideal location and the staff make the stay perfect- we will be returning!

Room Tip: Any room you are given will have a wonderful view, some are located up a number of steps, so if you...

We"ve just had a fantastic 7 days staying at the Tara Beach Hotel. We checked in booked a safe deposit box and didn"t need to reception again till check out. The bedrooms are basic but really clean and comfortable.Breakfast is also basic, toast cereal, ham and cheese or oranges but when i got on the scales on returning home you could tell i hadn"t been eating a full english as no weight gain !!!The gardens are beautiful and we sat on our terrace to have a drink surrounded by orange and pomegrante trees. The pool was great and you could choose a sun bed any time of day,no getting up at rediculous o"clock to put towels out!!We enjoyed cocktails around the pool especially at happy hour and there was a good selection to choose from. There is also some gorgeous restaurants a few yards from the hotel. All in all a fab place to stay and would recommend it to everyone, especially for a peaceful, relaxing hassle free holiday

Room Tip: bungalow rooms are brilliant

4.8.13-22.8.13 Tara Beach is in a lovely setting, nice pool and just over road from beach, with few mins walk to the town centre (up small steep hill), set in lovely grounds. Our room 108 was cosy! usual Greek basic, we had a kingsize bed but only campbed for our 12 year old, so bit disappointed, however Rep (Felicity-best yet), was more than happy to arrange us to move and the management are very friendly so am sure they would have been happy to arrange for us....BUT the redeeming feature of this room was the 2 balconies, one overlooking sea (full moon one night..breathtaking) and one overlooking the pool.....so for us this more than compensated, so we stayed put. There are rooms with 'proper' beds for 3rd person (room 103 is one). Air con was 90Euro for 2 weeks, well worth it.
All the staff were really friendly, particularly Yiannis the owners son who learns and calls you by your name straight off (even if he hasn't met you he still knows your name!), kitchen, cleaning staff lovely and friendly too.
The rooms are kept clean, with regulary linen and towel changes. We only used the pool a couple of times, but area was nice and clean etc., we preferred the Pikiona pool which is free to use (although think they like you to at least buy a drink, so we would get water for Euro 1)
There is live music next door at The Makis some evenings, which on our 1st night feeling tired etc., we were thinking 'oh no loud music'....but in saying that once balcony doors and inner doors shut it did not disturb us atall.
We hired a car and visited Argostoli, Sami, Poros, Katelios and Melliani Lake all well worth a visit. We chose different restaurants to try out but liked Pikiona (great views, on seafront and carmalised chicken is lovely), La Luna (on corner bottom of main high street), Scandinavia and Scirrocco to name a few.
There is a nice breeze which helps keep the reduce the heat of the day. The beach is pebbly, so water shoes are a good idea and you can buy them there. We bought an unbrella for 5 euro which was great to have.
We had a great family holiday and would recommend to anyone both the hotel and resort.

Stayed for 14 beautiful nights late June - Yiannis and his staff made us extremely welcome from the outset to the very end - hospitality was superb. The hotel is spotless, the grounds absolutely beautiful, the pool fabulous - it's lovely and quiet - and of course it is right next to the beach - and only a very, very short walk away from Skala town centre and Captain Vengalis Boat Cruises - and access to car hire, beautiful tavernas, supermarkets etc.etc, etc. We had the most fabulous holiday - and we will be returning as soon as we possiby can!!! So happy that we found Tara Beach Hotel!!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the older part of the hotel - with wonderful views of the beach - it was just fabulous
