We first stayed at this inn 8 years ago after it was recommended by a Greek hotelier friend who used it as a winter retreat. It was idyllic then and remains so. This inn is not for those looking for Claridges style living, it is for those seeking simple but extremely comfortable accommodation and good company.
The inn is a restored eighteenth century house together with converted outbuildings, located in the middle of this fairly remote village which hangs on the side of Mount Astraka beneath the towering rock outcrops known as the Pyrgi (Towers). Realistically it is only accessable using you own transport as the local buses call twice weekly.
The rooms are spacious and airy without air conditioning which is not necessary at this altitude, they do, however, have the benefit of open fires for winter use. The rooms are spotless with crisp fresh linen and soft towels; each has an ensuite wet room of good dimensions.
Breakfast consists of fresh bread, fruit, juice, yoghurt, honey, jam, cheese etc and is served with excellent coffee (or tea) at tables on the terrace or (in winter) in the taverna.
'Eating out' is really 'eating in' unless you walk or drive the 3 klms back to the larger village of Megalo Papingo where you will find several tavernas. However, the food offered by the owner and his wife is simple, traditional and very good; portions are large and cost is low. Most of the guests eat here and are joined by one or two locals.
The village of Mikro Papingo is a cluster of stone built houses linked together by narrow cobbled paths. At the top, the village is traversed by the 03 trail which was originally one of the numerous packhorse trails, in regular use until the early 1950's. The village sits at the northern end of the Vikos Gorge and the majority of visitors have at least a little walking on their agenda but this is not essential; you can enjoy the stunning beauty and soak up the peace and tranquility.Next door to the inn is the old school house which is now a WWF museum and heritage centre, this is well worth a visit.
