My wife and I have just returned from a week’s holiday at Lichnos Beach Hotel. First of all we must say that the setting is magnificent, in a small bay, with views, on an inclined slope with an excellent beach, lovely pool and four good local tavernas as well as a basic mini market all close by. That however is where our adulation ends. We booked quite late so were unable to book a deluxe room and instead accepted a standard room. Our expectations of this were not high and certainly weren’t exceeded, these are semi refurbished rooms, but clean and basic. Before booking we read the many Tripadvisor reports about the outstanding service, in fact almost everyone stressed the excellent service. Having now experienced, what we can only describe as appalling service, it makes you wonder if the staff themselves wrote the other reports. Now let’s exclude the cleaner, the driver, the main barman and the petite fair haired girl at reception from these comments, who were all pleasant and helpful.
Our experience started on the first night when we decided to eat at the hotel. The restaurant wasn’t busy, yet we waited 25 minutes for a drink, the food was no more than OK and like most things at the hotel quite expensive and they served warm white wine. When we asked if it could be cooled, they gave us some ice to put in it (airline style). Breakfast is served from 7.30 to 10.30. We arrived at 10.25, collected some residue items from the buffet and started to eat. At 10.35 we realised that we had forgotten to pick up some butter to put on the bread that we had already collected. When we re-visited the buffet area, some items had been cleared away, including the butter, so I asked for a carton and was told that they only serve until 10.30 so we couldn’t have any, I insisted speaking to someone else who again reiterated this stance. Eventually after an argument she went to the kitchen 5 metres away and brought out a small carton of butter. On the second morning, we arrived at 10.15 and when collecting some food found that they were out of yoghurt, I asked for some and was told that they finish serving in 10 minutes time, and they didn’t have any left (couldn’t be bothered to get any), they were also out of bread.
We didn’t choose to let the staff’s attitude effect our holiday, so apart from breakfast, decided to eat at the four excellent local tavernas or in Parga for every meal afterwards. The local tavernas, which are a stone's throw from the hotel are all typically Greek with very friendly, welcoming staff and good food. In particular the Coral, two doors away was excellent.
On the last day, we were trying to put the poor service behind us and in the event that we could bear to return, decided to ask the receptionist if there was a deluxe room that we could take a quick look at to see what this would be like for any potential future holiday. I went to reception at 12.30 (30 minutes after the checkout time and asked if there was a room between occupiers that we could look at, I was told no they were all taken and none were between occupation. Taking a walk down to those rooms I saw at least 3 that were indeed between occupation and had a look inside one, (where the cleaner had left the door open for airing). Alas I can’t see ourselves returning!
