This was our first Mark Warner holiday, booked primarily on the basis of their reputation for excellent child care and the childcare was indeed absolutely fantastic.
Both children loved their half days spent in their clubs, the staff were fantastic with them and absolutely made their holiday. The drop-in evening creche was also very good and meant that we didn't have to choose between all of us eating very early, or taking tired and grumpy children to dinner later in the evening. The 24 hour kitchen stocked with milk was also very useful.
We had a junior suite in the newly refurbished hotel and the quality of the accommodation was very good. Spacious rooms, lots of storage, clean and modern bathroom etc.
The grounds are also very well kept and attractive and the sports facilities, although we personally didn't use them very much, seemed to provide everyone with what they needed.
There were aspects of the resort though that were not quite so good - not enough to spoil the holiday, but improving them would have moved it from an ok holiday to a great one.
The resort is very remote - you can't really walk to anywhere else. Not a problem as such until you need/want to buy something other than what is stocked in the resort's (very expensive) shop. You could not buy bottles of water or soft drinks in the shop, meaning that you have to pay bar prices (i.e. 3 euros for a can of Coke) for all your drinks. Jugs of water are provided for meals but I feel these should have been available throughout the day as well.
Another grumble was the overall dining experience. The food itself was actually very good - lots of choice, freshly prepared etc, however the dining area is very busy and crowded and did not have air conditioning, meaning that at breakfast time in particular it was uncomfortably hot. As the dining area is partially open air, there was also a problem with birds. Whilst I accept that this cannot be entirely prevented, there were actually a couple of birds nests in the dining area which were allowed to remain - not the best advert for hygeine. An adult-only section of the dining room would also have been nice - for those parents who had chosen to use the drop-in creche, or people holidaying without children.
The childrens buffet (in the Italian restaurant) was open for a very limited time (45 mins) meaning a lot of children were trying to eat at the same time. The result was a very long queue for the food and a very crowded dining area.
Our room on the ground floor unfortunately had an infestation of ants while we were there. Not really the fault of the hotel, however they did not seem particularly eager to try and resolve the issue, despite us asking daily to be issued with some kind of spray that we could keep in the room and use when necessary.
In summary, Mark Warner Lakitira is an attractive resort and a great place for kids - nice pool, fantastic child care, lots of entertainment etc, however it falls short of its 4* description in a couple of areas, particularly the dining experience (both adults and children) and the reluctance of the hotel staff to resolve issues.
I would probably return to a Mark Warner resort at some point but probably to a smaller, more centrally located resort.
