“Luke warm springs excursion”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

The volcano and hot springs excursion was great value, I couldn't believe it included everything (except they forgot to tell us there was a 2€ fee when you arrive at the volcano). The volcano was an uphill hike to get to but reasonably short and easy. It was cool to see smoke coming out of the volcano but it really just looked like a couple of rocky craters in the ground.

The hot springs weren't hot, and there is "natural" rust or "oxidation" in the water, giving it a brown hue. Don't brush by any on the high rocks because it'll come off on your bathing suit. Overall the spring weren't very hot, my girlfriend was freezing the whole time, but an interesting experience !

“Great view from Nea Kammeni, no landing at hot springs though.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We booked this on Dakoutros travel through our hotel for 15 Euros each.

It's a glass-bottomed boat, but there's not much to see there apart from a few fish.

The main island, Nea Kammeini, was a bit of a trek: you need to be in shape to walk to walk nearly a mile rising 500 feet on a rocky path. As a volcano, it's rather disappointing.... the only activity is a bit of steam and some sulfur deposits on the rock in a couple of places. The views from the top are stunning, though.

The trip then goes to the other caldera island, Palea Kammeni, where there are hot springs from the seabed. Unfortunately the boat did not allow us to disembark on the island: the only way to visit the springs is to jump off the boat into deep water and swim to them.

Since I'm not a strong swimmer, I didn't want to try that... I think the promo info could have made this clear; I felt somewhat disappointed.

“Not long enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

If you visit Santorini then this trip out to the active volcano (Nea Kameni) is a must. There isn't a lot happening now at the surface but think what is going on under your feet! Wear good footwear as the walk is over fairly rough ground. There are several old craters and a few active fumaroles and the views from the top are spectacular, back across the caldera to Fira and Oia.
After the walk the boat takes you around the corner to another island, Palea Kameni, where you can jump off the boat and swim around to a little rocky bay where the water warms up due to warm underwater springs and you can smear yourself with black volcanic mud scooped up from underwater and which is said to be great for the complexion!
This was a really good trip but we could have done with at least another 30 mins on the volcano and another 15 mins at the hot springs. Well recommended, but shop around for prices of the trip which vary from place to place. And don't forget your swimmers and towel or wear them under your clothes like we did.

“Adventure trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

How often do you get to walk up an active volcano ? Well, this was our chance. But yeah, if you are expecting lava and magma flowing out ... you are sure to be disappointed. That part of the volcano is under water (thankfully) and you get to see only the rocks that have formed over the years due to eruptions. What I found most fascinating was the difference in topography of two parts of island - which were made from two different explosions. One the recent one was barren with large rocks and the other one had withered with time and had vegetation etc coming.
If you are the adventure types, and like to trek a little, I would suggest you to take a boat and go on this island. Its nice !!
