We were not sure what to expect here so we were absolutely thrilled upon arrival in the port to see the Blue Sand van waiting for us with smiling Nikos to take us to the Hotel. The Hotel is fabulous, located on a sea cliff overlooking the beach in Agali (which means "embrace" and one does truly feel embraced here). Our room was beautiful, white and crisp with an incredible terrace overlooking the endless blue Aegean and the beach. Linens were soft and beautifully white, very cooling, and the AC was heavenly on hot days. At night, the hotel is dreamy, beautifully lit, almost like a heavenly cloud.
Breakfast is very nice, served also by Nikos and his brother, Stavros, two incredibly sweet fellows who really make you feel at home. Breakfast is the same every morning, but you also have the choice of eggs and Greek yogurt and FRESH fruit salad. The coffee is delicious but you cannot get anything until 9am ... as an early riser, I found myself trolling around the wee village (a total of 12 buildings, that's it) early trying to find a coffee somewhere. Katerina was filled with suggestions and was so helpful and sweet.
The beach is very nice, beautifully familiar and the Hotel has chairs and umbrellas for guest use. There are two tavernas right on the beach. Everyone has sufficient space to swim, sunbathe, read or sleep withour anyone being in your face and, at the end of the day, it is wonderful to go up to the covered patio (where breakfast is served) to have an espresso fredo or beer served by the smiling Stavros and talk to him while cooling your heels.
The only thing we were unhappy about was the internet signal, which was very weak in our room, especially at "peak" times. We were told about this in advance by Katerina, the affable manager, so we were not so bothered by it but if you are looking to upload heavy duty files or are looking for a strong WiFi signal, plan to get up very early or just relax and acquiesce to the fact you are on a small island in the midst of the incredibly blue Aegean Sea and enjoy it! Also, the signal is stronger near reception.
We would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to go off the grid, relax, be pampered and live in the lap of Cycladic simplicity. The Hotel staff cannot do enough to keep you happy and relaxed and Nikos and Stavros are two wonderful guys, owners, and the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We did go to the Chora one day and it should not be missed (make sure you try the incredible matsata, pasta made only on Folegandros; it is out of this world. We understand that the owners' aunt in a nearby village makes the best matsata, but since we didn't have a car, we took the bus to the Chora and had it there). The bus can take you back and forth to the Chora several times a day which is very convenient. The trip up and down the hill is slow and somewhat harrowing as it is a big bus going up and down a pretty steep hill, but the Greeks take these hills, cliffs and mountains in stride.
This is a gorgeous, dreamy family-owned hotel, very romantic and beautiful ... this is the kind of place people dream about when they think of the Greek islands and it exceeded our expectations in almost every way. When you speak to Stavros and Nikos, you're speaking to the owners and they listen to everything you say intently. They are wonderful and are always smiling happily, which sets the happy tone for this lovely hotel. GREAT for a honeymoon or romantic getaway!
