“Dreamy Hotel in Folegandros”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

We were not sure what to expect here so we were absolutely thrilled upon arrival in the port to see the Blue Sand van waiting for us with smiling Nikos to take us to the Hotel. The Hotel is fabulous, located on a sea cliff overlooking the beach in Agali (which means "embrace" and one does truly feel embraced here). Our room was beautiful, white and crisp with an incredible terrace overlooking the endless blue Aegean and the beach. Linens were soft and beautifully white, very cooling, and the AC was heavenly on hot days. At night, the hotel is dreamy, beautifully lit, almost like a heavenly cloud.

Breakfast is very nice, served also by Nikos and his brother, Stavros, two incredibly sweet fellows who really make you feel at home. Breakfast is the same every morning, but you also have the choice of eggs and Greek yogurt and FRESH fruit salad. The coffee is delicious but you cannot get anything until 9am ... as an early riser, I found myself trolling around the wee village (a total of 12 buildings, that's it) early trying to find a coffee somewhere. Katerina was filled with suggestions and was so helpful and sweet.

The beach is very nice, beautifully familiar and the Hotel has chairs and umbrellas for guest use. There are two tavernas right on the beach. Everyone has sufficient space to swim, sunbathe, read or sleep withour anyone being in your face and, at the end of the day, it is wonderful to go up to the covered patio (where breakfast is served) to have an espresso fredo or beer served by the smiling Stavros and talk to him while cooling your heels.

The only thing we were unhappy about was the internet signal, which was very weak in our room, especially at "peak" times. We were told about this in advance by Katerina, the affable manager, so we were not so bothered by it but if you are looking to upload heavy duty files or are looking for a strong WiFi signal, plan to get up very early or just relax and acquiesce to the fact you are on a small island in the midst of the incredibly blue Aegean Sea and enjoy it! Also, the signal is stronger near reception.

We would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to go off the grid, relax, be pampered and live in the lap of Cycladic simplicity. The Hotel staff cannot do enough to keep you happy and relaxed and Nikos and Stavros are two wonderful guys, owners, and the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We did go to the Chora one day and it should not be missed (make sure you try the incredible matsata, pasta made only on Folegandros; it is out of this world. We understand that the owners' aunt in a nearby village makes the best matsata, but since we didn't have a car, we took the bus to the Chora and had it there). The bus can take you back and forth to the Chora several times a day which is very convenient. The trip up and down the hill is slow and somewhat harrowing as it is a big bus going up and down a pretty steep hill, but the Greeks take these hills, cliffs and mountains in stride.

This is a gorgeous, dreamy family-owned hotel, very romantic and beautiful ... this is the kind of place people dream about when they think of the Greek islands and it exceeded our expectations in almost every way. When you speak to Stavros and Nikos, you're speaking to the owners and they listen to everything you say intently. They are wonderful and are always smiling happily, which sets the happy tone for this lovely hotel. GREAT for a honeymoon or romantic getaway!

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view and terrace.

We stayed at Blue Sand for 9 nights in the first two weeks of September. The hotel is really beautifully designed with high quality materials throughout. We were in room 105 with a balcony overlooking the bay. Superb. Agali Bay is actually a good place to be based if you want a good beach on your doorstop and the hotel will run you to Hora if you want to go (10EUR for two of you). We hired a scooter for 18EUR a day from Hora. All the staff are really friendly and attentive. Couldn't wish for anything to be better. Oh yes, breakfast is great too.

I was looking forward to my stay in Blue Sand Hotel, as I knew where it is situated and was sure that it would be lovely. Indeed, the hotel is a true gem, with just a few room so it has the atmosphere of a boutique hotel. Amazing design which takes the traditional architecture of the Aegean islands a step further, with really modern, minimal touches. Impeccably decorated in every aspect. Our room was not huge but spacey all the same, with most furniture built into it (such as the bed and small couch). The bathroom was modern and clean with Korres amenities which are my favorite. The small terrace had an amazing view, as is the case for all rooms really.
The breakfast / cafe area is lovely, with the best views. The greatest place to relax in the late afternoon, home some coffee and enjoy the sunset. Whatever we tried was delicious (best coffee on the island, fresh fruit salad, great snack menu - we tried the chicken fajitas which was unexpectedly tasty). Breakfast was not buffet, but fresh and tasty all the same.
The hotel is situated overlooking the island's most known and accesible beach, Agkali, which has nearby cafes and restaurants unlike most beaches which offer no facilities at all. The sea is beautiful with crystal clear water. And all that within a minute's walk down the steps from the hotel. Towels, umbrellas and chairs were available for hotel guests.
But perharps the nicest touch was personalized service by the owners, Katerina and Nikos, as well as Stavros at the bar. They were all very friendly and welcomed us warmly. Apart from the free transport to and from the port, Nikos was always available to drive us wherever we wanted (at a cost), which was a real plus as we didn't have a car with us.
Overall I thought the hotel offers great value for money for a trully special stay and I look forward to staying there on my next visit! Could not recommend it more strongly!

We really enjoyed our stay at Blue Sand Hotel.

The positives:
- Lovely family. I had quite severe sea sickness from the ferry from Santorini and was really worried about the ferry to Athens so Katerina gave me tablets prior to my departure.
- Free transfers from port to hotel
- Probably the best breakfast I have had in a hotel. It's not a buffet but breakfast consisting of fresh breads, eggs, yoghurt and fruit salad prepared to order.
- Quiet, clean and large rooms
- Small boutique hotel so very tranquil
- Overlooking small quiet beach with umbrellas and chairs provided by hotel

Please be aware that Folegandros is a really small island with an extremely small town. If you are after night clubs and fancy restaurants best not to visit this island. However if you are after a nice relaxing break (perhaps following visiting other busier islands) than I would recommend staying on the beach at Blue Sand Hotel.

We stayed at Blue Sand Folegandros for two days, and it was, by far, the best decision ever. The hotel staff were very attentive and polite, providing a very good service. Katerina was very nice and helpful, always keen to respond to our queries and happy to assist us in any way we need. The hotel itself is amazing. Located in an idyllic place, quiet and beautiful spot it has been very nicely done. Do not be fooled by its 3 stars rating, this is based upon the fact that they do not have a pool, but who needs that when the beach is just downstairs and other beaches are within waling distance?
I agree entirely with recent comments made here. Superb breakfast (the best one we had in our week of Greek holidays).
I cannot recommend this hotel and their staff highly enough.

The view of hotel is breath taking, especially at the big balcony where breakfast is served. The breakfast is probably the best breakfast we ever had! Fresh fruit salad, sandwiches, variety of breads, honey and several flavours of marmalades along with coffee and fresh milk.

Blue sand hotel is very close to the best beach of the island, Agiali. The hotel offers free of charge, umbrellas and small chairs to use on the beach. However you have to wake up early because the beach is crowded after 11am.

The minimal design of the hotel and the rooms is very nice and stylish. The stuff of the hotel is very helpful and polite. Blue San Hotel is our top choice for Folegandros.
