Dropped off at bottom of hill by transfer, so not practical for anyone with walking difficulties, not easy making 80 steps with two suitcases. But well worth the effort, room was spacious, very we'll furnished with views over sea and pool. Ira the in house guest relations rep was extremely helpful, sorting our car hire and places to visit. The hotel is well placed just short walk to the old town and literally a restaurant on every corner you are spoilt for choice we didn't have a bad meal.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking pool are quieter than those on front

Located to the west of the old town, it is on the far side of the headland from the beaches that attract the crowds.

It’s on a hillside overlooking the sea, and there are about 80 steps up from the main road to the hotel door (including 20 steps from the street on which it is situated). We were dropped off at the bottom of the steps by Cretan Holidays’ ‘resorthoppa’ minibus service for no apparent reason other than the driver could not be bothered to drive a couple of hundred metres up the hill!

Suites are spacious, and comfortable, with large north-facing terraces furnished with easy chairs and a table and chairs for alfresco dining. Equipment for preparing meals is adequate, although the quantity of crockery is limited. But, why would you bother cooking when there are several excellent and reasonably priced restaurants within 20 minutes walk.

The bathroom was a designer's delight, but scored low on practicality, e.g. poor lighting over the sink, no shelf for toiletries, and no handrails to assist anyone climbing into the jacuzzi/shower

Breakfast buffet was generally good.

The nearest beach is just pebbles, but there are lots of sunbeds around the pool, some in places that are sheltered from the wind, which is generally more noticeable up the hill than at sea level! Interesting range of services in the Spa.

Our experience at Macaris is really an example of how we need to become better at judging a hotel from the reviews. Most reviewers love this place, and we really didn't. I hope this review will help you find out if it's a hotel for you.

We appreciate sincere warmth and hospitality over all else when we stay in a hotel. It determines the athmosphere also among the guests. What we got here from most of the staff was polite indifference.

The hotel sends a lot of 5 star signals with its grandiose lobby, huge breakfast buffet, enormous sea view terraces, spa facilities etc. It has trouble living up to the expectations it sets in my opinion.

One important example thereof is the restaurant: We had dinner twice there and it would have been ok standard in a beach front tourist taverna, but prices were 5 star. The breakfast looked definitely 5 star, but when some days the orange juice was mixed with syrup, the bread and omelettes were from yesterday and the coffee served with ressentment, it seriously undermatched the expectations.

Rather than elaborating further I would say that the people who will love this place are those who want a classy hotel and correct service, and who are not so much foodies as we perhaps are.

It is difficult to fault this hotel for a stress-free location to get away from it all. The apartments are large, well designed and very comfortable. The balcony looks over the sea and you can hear the waves. The doors onto the balcony are well supplied with options for maximum comfort such as fly nets, curtains or shutters. Food and drink are great, including a fine breakfast selection each morning which you'd find hard to beat. Staff are consistently friendly and helpful, and we agree with the previous reviewer about the helpfulness of the lady who provides tourist information. Half board enables you to walk into town for meals each evening - about a 10 minute walk away with an amazing variety of tavernas to choose from. All in all, a great little hotel, strongly recommend it. Probably more suited to couples seeking a quiet sophisticated venue rather than families.

staff was incredible. I want specifically to mention Ira, the lovely tourist relation representative that gave us great tips for perfect excursions. The room was big and well designed, with a perfect view to the sea. The kitchen was well equipped fitting for cooking. Breakfast was tasty with huge variety and breakfast hours (8:30 - 11:00) suited us well. With Ira's help we planned a nice day trip to the south of Crete. This hotel exceeded our expectation in any respect and we certainly want to visit there again.

The staff was incredible, the facilities were great and the location can't be beat. It's a short walk to the old town and there's a great restaurant called Prima Plora that I strongly recommend about a 15 minute walk along the main road.

My kids loved the pool area. We hit it every day, especially after a beach day. The staff was great in brining food and drinks to us in the pool (and our room).

The rooms were big, clean and the overall facility was well maintained. Ira (the concierge) helped out with our travels, the desk staff assisted with rental cars and dinner reservations, and the general staff were just great people. And very funny.

We had only planned to stay 4 nights, but extended the duration twice - that's how much we liked it. We're definitely coming back. And we met multiple other couples/families who had been back multiple times.

Room Tip: We had a great room overlooking the ocean and the Fortezza and old town were off to the right. Even...

Stayed here two nights at the end of a three week twin island holiday. Booked a huge two bedroomed suite with huge balcony which had large wooden table and chair for six, outdoor ratten sofa and chairs set, two wicker large armchairs and coffee table plus a hot tub (extra 60 euros per day to use).

Suite also had dining area, kitchen with all basic amenities, lounge, separate toilet, bathroom with corner bath and shower over, flat screen tv in lounge and both bedrooms.

Nice size pool though gets very busy and one day there was no room round the pool so we went to a nearby beach within walking distance where there were free sunbeds and umbrellas though you are expected to obviously buy drinks and lunch from the cafe/bar. As with all hotel pools in high season some residents can get 'ownership' of sunbeds and feel no guilt at leaving the pool area or 2+ hours with towels on 'their' claimed beds. Such a shame all hotels don't arrange pool attendants to organise and stop this practice.

Breakfasts were very good and staff attentive. Short 4 minute drive into town, park at the car park on this side of town near old wall and sea and walk in, gorgeous old town to spend the evening with plenty of restaurant choices and shopping.
