I went in holiday for the first time to Crete with my 10 yr old daughter in the Easter Holidays and got more than I expected. We stayed at Mythos Beach.[---------------]which is exactly what I wanted, a relaxing stay near a beach, far away from the madding crowds, nice food and fantastic scenery, (guaranteed sea view) we feel asleep to the sound of the waves. And a chance to practice my Greek (though basic I was happily indulged). Mickalos greeted us at 5 am smiling and was charming and smiled throughout our stay. Nothing was a problem.
We did have a day of torrential rain so took a local bus to Rethmynon for a wander (thank goodness we didn’t choose to stay there, it seemed so big and busy!) and we’re coming from SELondon!!!!!
Our room had a fantastic view of the sea and rolling hills & mountains and a lemon tree just outside the balcony from which we made our own Lemon Tea! I could watch my daughter play safely on the beach from the balcony, there were rocks to climb, crabs to catch & little shoals of fish a safe little bay for swimming though very cold as it was April, but fresh! A few beds and parasols enough for the residents. Your legs get very strong as you have to access everywhere by steps has everything is built into the cliffs.
We had a two-bed apartment that had all the basic needs catered for, which we didn’t need to cook as the choice of taverner’s served great array of food especially fresh fish etc. at a good price.
We had our breakfast at Sophia Hotel which was nice a chance to meet other residents, not many English (hooray!) just other travellers who seemed in the know for a quiet chilled out spot.
All I can say it was a great place for the two of us, there were other children around for my little girl to play with from France, Germany and they all communicated well like kids do.
Big hello to our favourite waiter Georgios. We are listening to the CD’s of Greek music he got us. We listened a lot to their local radio station and soon knew their top ten!

The place is halfway from Rethymnon to Herakleon. The place is hilly and you need to go almost throug all the village almost up to the port to find the hotel (we were travelling by bicycles thus it took us sufficient efforts). Sofia and Mythos are owned and operated by the same people, thus we have initially booked Sofia and were actually offered Mythos which we liked even better. The hotel is sited on the slope looking over the bay and small port (actually just two berths and a restaurant). The hotel is directed downwards - from the reception to the beach along the slope. The room has a balcony with a really fantastic view through the trees (see on the picture). Coming out of the room you find yourself on the steps leading to the beach. The place is far from overcrowded and the beach is very clean and nice. We had a room containing one sleeping room and a kind of a kitchen with additional sofa. The furniture and equipment is rather simple and far from modern, but everything is working.
The food was plain but good and fresh.
The staff is friendly.
In summary, if you like 5star hotels full of marble and modern furniture and equipment then avoid the place. But if you like quiet countryside atmosphere of a small privat hotel, then the place is for you.

The hotel we stayed at was the Mythos as the Sofia is across the road,where incidently you get the meals and where the pool is.Not the best position for a hotel as it resides on the sloping cliffs immediately on the beach , but hey.Crete is pretty much like this all over.A very mountanous island.A large number of Germans stay in this area so get busy with your german language ...if you can raise a conversation with them.We had to pay extra for the air conditioning and even though we are a family of 5 , the apartment we were given had quite a good setup comprising of a kitchenette a sleeping area with 2 single beds, a bathroom / shower room, and a main bedroom with another 2 single beds.....Lucky baby is small enough !!!!!
The food in the hotel did get a bit repetative though it was fresh...we spent most of our time on the beach with the little 'uns which was perfect as it was shallow without any dangerous off drops or under currents.the water and beach were very clean and made for an enjoyable stay.The hotel didnt provide any conveniences but the staff were nevertheless quite polite and had good english.
