Judy and I discovered Pepi last September when we stayed for 2 glorious weeks, hence we returned for 2 weeks, 03-17th May. The situation of Pepi is what really makes it for us- in the heart of The Old Town but no traffic noise, only the beep beep of Greek Nat Bank ATM next door. The sister hotel, Ideon is 5 mins walk. Here is use of pool, internet and bar. We also stayed at this fine 3* hotel last year.
A 5minute walk away will lead to great Tavernas (not on the front) and supermarkets. The Pepi is exclusive to Thomsons/First Choice, so only British folk, but once over that hurdle things are fine! The Bus station is a 20min walk away and from here you can travel to anywhere on Crete, as we did for an overnight stay in Anogia.

Having researched numerous reviews we were a little bit dubious about going to the pepi. I can honestly say these studios are very, very nice, set in the heart of the old town in Rethymnon with everything close by. We had room 18 absolutly lovely. Restaurants, street cafe/bar, shops and supermarkets. I must say there is a lack of proper bars in rethymnon, me being a football fan had to watch some games on small tv's with music on instead of sound. On Saturday had to try and desipher greek to get football results. We did try a good selection of restaurants, the ones near the sea front are expensive (you pay for the view) one of the best we tried is 'Agrimia' good food at good prices, another one we found was out of this world, 'TO ELLINIKON' a restaurant you would walk past, small, very traditional and somewhat bland looking but the food, especially the fish was amazing we went back the following night for same dish it was that good, but unfortunatly had to fly home the next day, this restaurant is well worth the visit. The Studios are about a 15min walk from the bus station where you can get a bus anywhere, the staff are really helpfull as well. We did find it a little expensive, only because of the exchange rate, expect to pay 3 to 4.5 euro for a pint a good meal for 2 inc wine 40 to 50 euro and a return trip to Chania on the bus for 2 people 26Euro. A good place to go for a week. Downside, you do need to get out and about as Rethymnon is a town not yet geared up for tourism, very nice and quaint but mainly a place for Cretans to relax and shop. We would go back but after a couple of years, we would reccomend the pepi if you love traditional greece. overall a good holiday but a bit boring if you stay in Rethymnon. (even had a day at Malia) to liven things up. Hope this helps Ian (42) Elaine (52)

We have just come back from a week at Pepi Studios. We booked it late, a month before we travelled and we paid an absolute pitance. On arrival, there is no manned reception area and you need to open your welcome pack (provided at the airport) to find out where your room is. On first impressions, the room does resemble something like a cell, very very basic - beds, a table, a small kitchenette... that's pretty much it and spotlessly clean. By the end of the week, we loved it ! We were in room 13 which, yes it's overlooked by the pool area, but we didn't worry about that at all. The kitchenette is tiny and you wouldn't be able to make anything other than breakfast to be honest. It didn't bother us as we always eat out anyway whilst on holiday.

There is a pool - more like a plunge pool that a swimming pool, but it was fantastic just to jump into to cool off. The area around the pool is lovely and is very shaded by palm trees.

The apartments themselves are located right in the middle of the old town. An absolutely fantastic location for exploring the prettier parts of the town. You can go to one of the larger hotels opposite the beach, but be warned, you'll be walking into the old town every night because this is where all the decent bars and restaurants are.

The beach is not too bad - what you can see of it bearing in mind it is completely covered by sunbeds.

There are lots and lots of restaurants in the old town - one not to miss is To Pigardi (one of the back streets near the Rimondi Fountain). A fantastic little Greek Taverna serving fantastic food at reasonable prices with very good service. You eat in a little courtyard area which is covered by bouganvilia and hibiscus - just beautiful.

A bus ride to Chania is also not to be missed - another beautiful little town about an hour up the coast. We picked up the bus from the main bus station (€24 return). A short walk the other end brings you out into the beautiful harbour. Absolutely lovely !

A fabulous week away - I think if we'd paid full price like a lot of other guests, we may have been a bit disappointed with the standard of accomodation, but we didn't pay full price, so we were more than happy with our lot.

A special message for Ray and Sally - thank you for your company - as we drove away in the taxi we both said that we should have swapped telephone numbers. If you read this review, and want to get in touch then I think you can do it through the site.

We have just returned from 2 weeks stay at the Pepi Studios, on arrival we were dissappointed to find only a 2 ringed cooker and a fridge, for a self catering facility, no kettle or toaster/grill, we asked the rep, who in turn said she would ask the owner if one could be supplied, the short answer of no came back, as it was not in the studio discription, of which we were not to know as we booked on the phone, the crockery and utensils were incomplete.
I must say this is the worst self catering we have come across and we made the best ot the situation by purchasing items to supliment the accommadation, We had room 13 and had to keep the curtains closed as the sun loungers were looking directly into the room, the pool was a bit of a shock{more like a foot spa}
We hired a scooter as we always do and toured the area enjoyed meeting the locals in the mountains, but found the townies a bit ignorant when they failed to part you from your money, unlike the locals in Stalis where we went last year.
Of the beaten track a very nice two course meal with drinks will be around 20 euro, be warned the bay/beach area the same will be 45 +

This was the first time we have booked a self catering holiday.
The apartments have been refurbished for this year. Everything was ultra clean and comfortable, with all you need for your stay. This was very good value for money. (We paid under £200 per person inc flights).
The location is perfect for getting out and about, with great restaurants and bars closeby. However, don't rely on the rep for local info - hopeless. Best to ask locally in shops or bars, the locals are really friendly.
Avoid the old harbour restaurants - hugely pricey (we paid 186 euros for a two course meal for two with house wine). The restaurants overlooking the sea as you walk to the Castle have a better view and the food is affordable (12 euro menu for 3 courses), as well as delicious.
The whole holiday was great and I would recommend this accommodation, Rethymnon itself and the food in Crete.

We recently stayed at pepi studios for 1 week 13th-20th Oct,it was the first time we have tried self catering.I am glad that i read reviews from the usual doom mungers as i then expected the holiday from hell.
What a surprise, lovely town, lovely apartment,CLEAN in all areas & cleaners 4 times during the week, everybody in fact staying there were under the same impression,so anybody thinking of going, don't be put off by the negative comments unless of course you are expecting the Ritz for budget prices. One word of warning though if you hire a car (Good Luck) the locals drive like lunatics.

If you are looking for clean modern accomodation in a fantastic location then Pepi studios are perfect. The rooms are basic but spotless and the peaceful atmosphere in the middle of the old town more than makes up for the lack of facilities. The pool is only a small plunge pool which had the added benefit of us not being woken up by kids at silly o'clock in the morning. Around the studios are fantastic tavernas. My advice would be to stay in the old town to eat the beach area is tacky and the harbour expensive. Also I would avoid any of the excursions provided by the tour operater since they are half price when booked through the agent on the harbour. Also visit Knossos in the afternoon or eaely evening when it is quietest and coolest.
