“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2014

Just returned from 7 days at the Minos at the end of October 2014. The hotel is in an excellent location just 15/20 minutes walk along the lovely sea front to the old town and 3 minutes from the beach. We didn't think the area was run down like a previous reviewer but hey everyone's entitled to an opinion (street view it and see for yourself). The hotel is really clean and spacious with a lovely main pool and smaller pool at the front. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. We had a junior suite which was really spacious (basically the size of two normal rooms) with nice touches like a bottle of wine, fruit basket and a fridge packed solid with juices, water and fizzy drinks.
The hotel was very quiet but it was basically the last week of operation so no complaint there.
Breakfast was very acceptable but we found the evening meals lacked quality and seemed to deteriorate the closer we got to the hotel closing.
We would definitely use this hotel again because of it's great location and friendly staff.

We spent two weeks at Minos from 23/09/14 until 07/10/14. As a previous reviewer said, don't be put off by the look of the hotel from the outside. Once you enter it is a great hotel. Staff from the minute you enter until you leave could not be more helpful and friendly. The room was adequate with everything you could want provided. We arrived at around 2.00am and when we got to our room there was a plate of sandwiches waiting along with a bowl of fruit, and bottled water.
The bathroom had toiletries for our use. The only negative i would mention was the lack of a shower curtain or shower screen, meaning the floor of the bathroom got soaked.
The room was cleaned every day, and bedding changed every couple of days, along with the towels.
Towels for use at the pool are available for hire at reception. You leave a deposit of €12 per towel, and when you return them you get €10 returned.
The hotel has two pools. A small pool at the front entrance to the hotel, and a larger one at the rear of the hotel. We used the one at the rear. We had no problem getting a lounger or umbrella. The pool was very cold when you first get in, but after a minute or so it was very refreshing. A nice touch was that the hotel would send round one of the waiting staff with Water Melon or grapes.

The restaurant food was excellent with a varied menu. Breakfast had a great selection, and you could get bacon eggs, fruit juice, cheese and cold meats as well as salads.

I would have no hesitation in recommending The Minos hotel to anyone going to Crete. If we return to Crete we will most certainly stay there.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 409 and had no problem with noise.

We have just returned from a week here a couple of days ago.
Our first impressions of this hotel were poor after the bus stopped on the roundabout opposite the hotel, the immediate area appeared run down and the bus driver pointed out the hotel over the road and left us to it. We navigated the busy road and looked for the hotel entrance, the Hotel Minos doors on the road level is just a bus stop room, so we then went up a steep drive way and found the main reception.
We paid extra for a Junior Suite, the room was clean and we had a bottle of wine and basket of fruit waiting. The beds were very hard and the previous occupant had obviously not liked the bright led light on the TV overnight as there was a plaster stuck on the front of the TV covering it.
The balcony looked over the pool and we could see the sea in the distance, but our room did not have a private balcony area, like some of the other rooms, we had a gate next to our room and our outside area was open for anyone to walk in.
There was a road the other side of the room, opposite our front door, which had the hotel tennis courts (very run down and did not look like they have been used in years). At night the sound of cars driving by with stereos blasting a max volume and scooters did get a bit annoying.
The cleaners came every day and did a good job, we did have one day when we stayed in the room/terrace all day and we kept trying to tell them we did not need the room cleaning, but after the third visit we just let them clean around us.
We were told by staff that the hotel closes at the end of October for six months and it was being slowly shut down whilst we were there. There were not many guests and we never had any problems getting a sun bed, the most people I saw in the main pool was probably 3 or 4 people.
The pool area was nice and clean and we liked sitting for breakfast or evening meal by the pool side.
The food was ok, there were lots of choices, but it was only average quality.
The bar was empty most of the time and we often had to wait for staff in another area to notice us so we could order a drink.
For the first six nights the most people the bar in the evening was us plus two others, there was no evening entertainment put on until out last night when a greek dancer was in the bar area.
He was very good and friendly and a few more people stayed in the bar that evening.
Our overall opinion was that we would not return to this hotel due to its location more than the hotel which would have been nicer in a slightly better area. I would also be interested to see what it is like in the peak summer period with more staff/guests.

My wife and I stayed here end of September for 10 days using jet 2 holidays. We paid extra fro a superior room and considered it to be well worth while and value for money. Late arrival meant we missed dinner but a large plate of sandwiches and fruit was left in our room for us. Along with water and a bottle of acceptable house wine. We had emailed for a high room and that is what was allocated to us enabling us to see the sea in the not very far distance. The room was a good size and well equipped with slim television,CD player, DVD player, air conditioning, large double bed, table, chairs, sofa and a well equipped bathroom but sadly lacking a plug in the bath for some reason.Bath robes and slippers were supplied Plenty of storage. towels changed every day,and the bathroom soaps replenished as required as were the tea and coffee in the room. The fridge was a welcome addition along with the free WiFi which was of moderate speed but worked OK.
The hardworking staff from the excellent cleaners to the reception and the restaurant were always of good humour with ready smiles and greetings. The food was very good and as we were on half board did get a bit repetitive after a week. I suspect that in the high season when the hotel will be full there would be quite a wait at busy times. We had the occasional wait but not for long. The outside swimming pool area was used as an overflow for eating. breakfast was excellent with all the usual goodies on display and a cook was always there to make you a fresh omelette or fried eggs to however you wanted them. In the evening at the same station fresh meat carved from the bone was always on offer. The evening entertainment was low key but adequate without being over the top. Bar was well stocked and reasonable prices with the early evening ubiquitous happy hour for the hardened tipplers.
On the whole I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday. Our room number 524 over looked the pool looking towards the sea in the distance and was quiet after the evening entertainment had finished but even that wasn't too intrusive. It is a hotch potch of a building with obvious additions made to it over the preceding years but this to me seems to the charm of the place. Lots of hidden places to find in the building. Some never seem to find the tennis courts! The room safe was charged for and in most hotels nowadays it is a free service but it was not extortionate for the peace of mind. The free car parking was at a premium near the entrance and was always full at night,I do not know if there was an over spill parking area anywhere else. we did intend to hire a car to explore but found there was ample to do exploring Rethymno Town and the countryside behind the town. The public transport to Heraklion and Chania was fine to use once the method was understood. Buy your local tickets from the shop next to the hotel to get to the centre, then buy tickets from the booth at the bus station to your destination. Be prepared to join the scrum getting on the bus in the capital!! Great fun and the bus rides enables one to see the countryside better than through the windscreen of a hire car watching some of the rather erratic driving I witnessed whilst there. The museums in Heraklion and Chania especially the archaeological in Heraklion and the Naval museum in Chania were fascinating. Other places worth seeing are Knossos and the Diktean cave where Zeus was born. again all the entrance fees were not expensive and if you are over 65 it was half price. The island of Crete is beautiful and there is so much to see an do. Th extreme gorges like the Samaria etc. are out of our reach now but for younger folk and with a car you can get anywhere quite quickly from centrally placed Rethymno and the relaxing welcoming Hotel Minos.

Room Tip: Worth the extra to have a superior room high up looking North towards the sea.

We last visited the Minos in 2012 when the staff were not very happy. This time the hotel is back to what it has always been a good friendly family hotel. We have stayed here 9 times always having a mini suite(it's worth the extra). The rooms and public areas are always spotlessly clean, the reception staff most welcoming and you get the feeling of being one of the family. It's only a 20 min walk down the Prom to the Venetian Harbour or 5 mins to the beach. I would advise booking B and B as there are a vast variety of reasonable restaurants in Rethymnon. If you fancy not going out the evening buffet at the hotel is very good. All the mini suites have a sea view and face SW so you get the sun all day. Great hotel. I'd class as 3* +

Loved this hotel, by far one of the nicest I've stayed in. The concierge is lovely, carried our bags up to our rooms while we checked in ( 4 large suitcases could not have been easy).

It's ridiculously close to the beach - literally a straight 2 minute walk from the hotel, and on the way there's a restaurant and supermarket. There's a room with a ping pong table, and supposedly a tennis court, though we couldn't find it. There was always entertainment every night, karaoke, magician, greek dancing etc. The buffet was also differently themed every night chinese, italian, morroccan, indian etc. The bartenders are lovely, and so are the waiting staff.

I would definitely 100% go back to this hotel if I was returning to Crete. The Old town is definitely worth a visit, take the big red bus, which is quite a walk from the hotel, but worth it. There are some really cute shops, mostly designer, but cheap shops for souvenirs.

We had a double room, which had aircon, a tv and two nightstands, also a decent sized wardrobe. We arrived late and missed dinner, so plates of sandwiches, fruit and crisps were waiting in our room upon arrival.

There are chefs who cook certain things freshly in front of you, like meat, but everything else is in trays.

Love the pools, the one out front is usually filled with children, and the back one is deeper and usually adults and teens. Everything is really clean and modern.

cant recommend this enough, its really quite at night, and the balcony has a sliding mosquito net door. If you open the door, the air con goes off though.

plus, FREE WIFI.

We have just returned from a two week holiday at this hotel it was our 4th time although our last visit was in 2007,we enjoyed ourselves very much ,all the staff are so friendly the hotel is spotlessly clean and the food ( we were on half board ) was even better than before they have a chef cooking eggs however you like them along with lots of other different choices for breakfast and the food at dinner time consists of lots of choices,The entertainment is low key but ok,if you want to stay by the pool you will have no problem getting sun beds etc.as others have said it is 5 mins walk to the beach and about 20 mins to the lovelly old town,on the way there are numerous tavernas to have a drink and maybe something to eat if you wish.We do have some negative points we were supposed to arrive at 430am but arrived one and a half hours late we were given room 328 this is a standard room the same as our other visits but in a different part of the hotel to say it was a dissapointment would be an understatement the room hardly had any wardrobe space it had a connecting door to the next room what was locked but you could hear the people in it talking so clearly and the view from the balcony was not that great, unlike other times when we overlooked the pool with sea views. When we got in our room at 6am we found a plate of stale sandwiches and a few soggy crisps (this as we found out on our last day was to compensate for the evening meal we did not get the day before)when all we really wanted was a nice cup of tea,it would have been nice if they could have left some water in the fridge,i telephoned room service at 7am asking for tea and was told i would have to pay 5 euros on top of the charge for the tea for room service which i declined to do,the final moan i have is we were leaving the hotel at 12.15am when i asked about evening meal we were told we would have to pay for it as they had left sandwiches in our room when we arrived we complained strongly and was given a voucher.
