We came in the very beginning of the season. There was too much water to make it possible to hike the entire length of the gorge as there was a stream running in the bottom. However, we did hike as far as we came, and can highly recommend the gorge as a nice hike to take in the beautiful nature of Crete. With the taverna located just before the park entrance, it is easy to get food here also (though we didn't try the taverna).
Bring good hiking boots, and be prepared to get across some obstacles, jump over water here and there (at least in the early season), and be prepared to do some minor climbing. This is not a hike for those with bad knees or struggling with balance. Some places were very steep. However, if only hiking in the very beginning of the gorge this will not be a major issue.
Recommended - and glad we took the time to visit!
